I'd like to change my userid to something I already use elsewhere. How can I do that?

you can not change the user id you will have to create a new user with whatever id you want to use.....

You can change your UID and/or GID, but this is going to cause you lots of little headaches. The command to do so is usermod and can only be run as root - I strongly recommend reading the man page before doing so.
The flag to change the UID is "-u uid" - and, according to the manpage, (emphasis mine)
Any files which the user owns and which are located in the directory tree rooted at the user's home directory will have the file user ID changed automatically. Files outside of the user's home directory must be altered manually.

imdeemvp,
Does that make a difference? I want to change 'jscott000' I use in this forum to something else.

It is not very hard to do. The board-database has a table for users and one for threads. Every user has a userid, which is unique and every new user next the next one. Every post you write is associated with a thread and with a userid. It is only a number. The nickname is written in the user-table just as a data. So you can change it. As long as you don't change the userid, it won't make any problems. But to change you nickname e.g. to GO LAKERS!, you would have to write an emil to someone with db access (mostly administrators) so they can change it. They have even a nice gui for it in the admin control panel. But I'm not sure, whether the admins are lakers fans :D
