I just want to know a few things about the mbr

if at some time in the future I wanted to get rid of FC3 and load something else.. my / boot would be gone at some point.. how do I fix my MBR so that I can just boot windows again ?

I dont know if that is what I want to do.. I just want to know how to format/set my mbr so it boots like a normal wondows box would..

I do want to try other distors in the future..MDK and suse for starters. but if my MBR is messed up what can I do?

thanks

You can fix the mbr with any xp disc. Insert cd and instead of doing an installation select repair and just fix the MBR.

I think on your Windows XP disc you type FIXMBR.

If you're "single booting" Linux, just installing another OS (even Linux of the same or different flavor) will always allow you to blow away the MBR (even if you end up replacing it with another GRUB).

Get a Windows 95 or 98 boot disk or a basic dos boot.

Must have windows on it if you have Windows 98 cd you can do this. I am not so sure about xp disk.

1.) make sure you have a command prompt

2.) Make sure whatever you are botting off of has FDISK.

3.) type in below

4.) FDISK /mbr

5.) This clears the boot record, and restores it with standard Window MBR.

P.S

I just did it last night

Windows XP works, at least, it blew away the grub I installed in the XP MBR.
