go to a term or console, input;
tail -f /var/log/messages [ENTER]
this will display the last ten lines of your messages file.
plug your usb in and watch what it says on the screen.
post the information, or any errors it displays for more help

hi golding
the tail -f /var/log/messages gave this. i notice that the usb device is spotted . my query is that i am unable to use or see this device normally. when using the hardware browser (fc3) the device is listed under HDD as /dev/sda1

If what you say is correct, the USB was being seen as sda1, but now is being seen as sdb1. Must have another scsi/usb device active in front of it.
All is not lost, just have to create a udev rule for your usb stick. Go here and read, it is what I did for mine.
< http://www.reactivated.net/udevrules.php >
This does mean, however, that it might not autorun/mount. But then, I never had autorun/mount as I have always used Enlightenemnt. Never seemed that important to me, I am used to manually mounting all my partitions and disks.
I have been told that Gnome does this, but I do not know about KDE. If it is important, got here;
< http://www.hut.fi/~tkarvine/mounttero/ > for tips on getting autorun/mount working.

i had to disable acpid to get usb working properly. try that first because it's easy (System Settings -> Server Settings -> Services).

thanks taylor65 and golding.
i did all things that you suggested. it seems to have worked.
BUT: it only seemed to work after i did an update last nite of my system. funny that. i could see the device but it would not auto mount until last nite.
anyway ta very much
