View Full Version : SMP only detecting one processor

After having a bit of a disk problem, I re-installed Fedora Core 3 on my Compaq 6400R Server, which has 4 Pentium Xeon processors. After re-installing the OS, I immediately began updating everything. Problem is, after updating to the newest version of the kernel, I notice that FC only detects one processor. When I run cat /proc/cpuinfo it only shows information for one processor. Does anyone know how I can "show" it the other 3? I honestly don't know if the initial version of the kernel recognized all 4, as I didn't check it. I know on the previous install of FC3, I had the most up-to-date kernel, and the system saw all 4 processors just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have the SMP version of the kernel installed?

Yes I do... I just booted using the version that came on the FC3 disks, and it didn't detect the other 3 either. I read through the kernel logs, and it mentioned something that my motherboard didn't support multiple processors. This is strange because just last week I had a working FC3 running on this very server, and it worked just fine. On startup, my bios informs me that all 4 processors were initialized. This is becoming aggrivating...

Could you post the output of the "uname -a" command?

Sure, give me a few minutes as I powered it down.

Output of uname -a:
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.10-1.741_FC3smp #1 SMP Thu Jan 13 16:53:16 EST 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
And what I was talking about before in my kernel log:
all it mentions is "SMP motherboard not detected"

That's the same kernel I'm running on an HP with 4 dual core procs (/proc/cpuinfo shows 8 processors). Hmm, you said you had it running before and it detected all of them. Have you tried installing an older SMP kernel to see if it's something with this latest one that is causing the problem? I'll do some digging and see if I can find anything.

I was running this same version on the last install... and I tried using the kernel that came with FC3 when I downloaded the CD images (about 2 or 3 weeks ago), and it didn't work either (however it worked the first go-around with this box). I think tomorrow I'm going to re-do my drive configuration (again, ugh), and re-install from scratch. We'll see how that works out. At any rate, I'm going to bed now, thanks for all your help, and let me know if you come up with anything. I'll keep this thread updated with information as I go.

Wow, this looks just like your situation with the same server (but with RHES3):

Here is something that might help:
http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Sep/2480.html
If that fails you might try is posting this on the forums at HP's web site. I have had success on occasions with HP/Compaq specific problems.

Void Main, thanks a million. That second link you gave me (from SuSE), upon reading it I suddenly remembered when I was using the SmartStart CD to re-configure my drive array, I changed the "OS" as reported by bios to "Other", so when I get off work tonight, I'll get into the bios and set it to SCO Unixware 7 and see if that works. I'll let you know the results. Thanks again for all your help!

Guess what, it worked just fine!!! I actually didn't set it to SCO UnixWare 7, I set it to Linux :) (poo on SCO!). Anywho, thanks a bunch for all your help! Surprisingly, I didn't even think about that.
