Hi - I have built a new 'cube' system which has an onboard NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX graphics - the card is seen in FC3 and 'apprears' to be running correctly at 1280 * 1024 however MPLAYER can't seem to play video
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) de

This error is explained here (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/faq.html#id2891420)

So the only way I can view video is using the command line option: -vo sdl

Howerver this doesn't allow nme to watch DVD's - mplayer just dies

Do I need to use the Nvidia created drivers to get the full playback functionality?

i should expect you would want the nvidia driver anyway, for the 3d acceleration (direct rendering etc.). also, try -vo gl

I have installed the NVidia driver and although I can playback vidoe - the quality is shocklingly bad - the vidoe is choppy and virtually unwatchabe.

I have tried other vo options but thew quality is always poor

Anyione got any thoughts?

Can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.cong to see your configuration.

Actually I decided to rebuild my workstation from scratch as I was having so many problems.

The bottom line is that if I install Nvidia's Audio drivers to fix a problem with the sound quality on the onboard audio video playback suffers to the point of being unplayable - this doesn't improve when I use the Nvidia grpahics drivers.

Anyone got any suggestions?
