xine is what I like best for playing DVDs. It even handles navigation. Just use yum or apt to get it from your favorite repository (FreshRPMS or DAG). You can also get totem-xine, which is sort of a front-end for xine that many people like.

The latest version of xine (out just a couple weeks now) has a new driver module for video (xxmc) which uses video acceleration for mpeg2 if available. So if you have the nVidia drivers installed, the new version of xine will take advantage of the idct and mc acceleration.

xine works. It sounds like you need to install the dvd decryption lib's libdvdcss, libdvdread etc to read your dvd. These libs can be found in rpm form at freshrpms or rpm.livna.org.
