I have an hp p1000 printer. I can get things to print, but if I DARE to try to cancel a print, the CUPS Gods curse me greatly and smite me also upon mine ego.
Specifically, the "cancel print" command simply doesn't do anything. It will stop the print, but unless I completely reboot, the job will be sitting there and will let nothing else come past it. Even a force quite just makes the printer icon go away. When I try to print something else, the job is still sitting there....Mocking me.....
Now, I actually have seen this sort of things with HP's in windows, so I really don't know if it's a cups issue or not, but then the cup runneth joke wouldn't work.
anyway, as a new linux user...printing is kind of important and HP is not really an obscure brand...there's probably all sorts of tutorials out there...can anyone point me in the right direction?

Try the Linux Printing site (http://www.linuxprinting.org/) ; it's a great place to start, if nothing else. Hope this helps.
Cheers,

I don't remember how I configured the first time, but I went through all these steps this time and saw the fruits of my labor from last time, which I'm deleting. I haven't fully tested it, but by installing as per the site you gave me things seem smoother and faster. Thanks a lot!

Well, it prints, but cancelling is still an issue. Guess I'll just have to be careful.

I don't know what I did but I have completely broken Fedora as you are not supposed to be able to. I installed the printer driver as per the instructions in the link above. It worked great. Then I was doing something unrelated, trying to install Nvidia drivers. That completely blew up my system, and it took me forever to be able to even get the X desktop to work. Now, the printer won't work. The new Queue I made for it has a red x in it. Actually, let me list my many many issues.
1. I can't print. Duh.
2. The printer queue that I added after what I thought was a succesful install of the HP driver (and which worked) now has a red X.
3. Whenever I reboot, I get a "choose printer driver" menu on startup.
4. WHETHER OR NOT I choose the correct driver, the queue still has a red x.
5. Trying to make a new queu to use, I hit add new and when it comes to the box where you choose a device, the hp is no longer visible, just the /dev/lp0. AFter the succesful install, this was followed by another entry that included my specific printer model. Hitting rescan system does nothing.
6. Even MORE fun...the main reason I tried this fresh install was that I could not seem to cancel printing jobs. They would stop, but stay in the queue and I could not get rid of them. I now have, by accident, a large document that I cancelled part way through...every time I reboot, it prints out a little bit of that document...sometimes just one line! I can't make this print job go away!
7. Printing is important. I hope someone can help.

Okay, I'm an idiot....the red x is about whether it is shared or not. I uninstalled and reinstalled and the cancelled job seems to have disappeared. I am too chicken to try cancelling another print job, as I need my printer right now, but THAT issue was not my own stupidity!
