I have read through this forum and have seen several possible ways to get the xmms player to read mp3. However, many of those solutions where 6mos to a year ago and may either be outdated or have bad links. Could someone please advise me on how to get the mp3 plugin for xmms.
Also, if you could post a link on how to get java working fo FC3 x86_64 as well as a mozill plugin.
Thanks!

I was able to get MP3s to play on my core 3 x86_64 using this plugin that is listed for core 2 x86_64.

I use xmms from freshrpms.net (http://freshrpms.net/rpm/xmms) which includes the mp3 plugin. I just checked and they don't have any x86_64 RPMs available for xmms, but you can always rebuild the source, rpmbuild --rebuild xmms-<version>.src.rpm.

Check which audio output plugin you have set in the prefs. Some work better than others depending on the system and version of the different sound packages installed. Try a different one and see if it clears up.
I used to use OSS because ALSA sounded crappy, but a recent update of ALSA cleared up that problem. If you're using ALSA, try updating it.
