I am trying to install fc3. My current configuration is
AMD 64 3000
ASUS K8N motherboard
apollo mx440-8x video card
512 MB ddr400 ram
120GB WD hard drive

I put the cd in and try to boot off cd. What happens is you can hear the cd spin up but then the light on the monitor that is normally green goes amber as if lost video input. I let it sit like that for about 10 minutes with no change. So I turned the CPU off then tried to boot my windows xp partition. Xp comes to the loading screen then it also dies. The screen goes blank and the green light goes to amber as if it lost video input. I have had fedora core 2 installed previously with no problems. Some please help!

Thanks,
Jason

It sounds like your hardware is not yet stable. Installing an OS (any OS) is a little premature.

Are you overclocking the CPU or memory? If so, try backing down to conservative values. For example, if your memory is CL2.5, set your BIOS to CL3. If you have the CPU set to overclock or auto, set it to normal or stable (whatever your BIOS calls it).

If your BIOS provides the function, check your fan speeds, temperatures, and voltages. Are the fans all spinning? If your CPU fan isn't spinning you may be overheating and getting a thermal shutdown.

Verify your drive cables are OK (swap with another cable), and that the drive jumpers are correct. Preferably, there should only be one drive on each cable, and it should be set to master (and plugged into the last connector on the cable for IDE).

Check your motherboard connectors to make sure they are all seated properly. When you installed the motherboard, did you make sure that the standoffs aligned with the mounting holes? Extra standoffs can short the motherboard.

In short, first get the hardware stable, then install your OS.

Turn off the power managment in the BIOS (acpi).
