Ok, one of the things I like about mandrake is their KDE has a nice startup sound when desktop is loading. I always wanted to do it in fedora but using GNOME enviroment. So I posted the thread here. (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32416) But I could not wait for the answer and started experimenting will all the players I installed (realplayer, mplayer, xmms, rhymthbox).

But all of them started in GUI but not mplayer! so this what you can do:

1. Download what ever sound you like from www.gnome-look.org and go to system sounds. This is the sound (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/download.php?content=12584&id=4)

2. Leave your sound in the home directory (unless some else can help with this). You can also create a sounds folder in your home directory and it would play too.

3. In order for sound to play in the background you need to install mplayer. (http://www.fedoranews.org/tchung/mplayer/)

4. Go to preferences >more preferences >sessions >startup programs and add this command: mplayer Startup1_4.oggor if you create a sounds folder this is an example how to add the line to sessions:This is you I add the line to sessions:/home/imdeemvp/sounds/Startup1_4.oggand the sound will play in the backgroud without starting mplayer gui at your desktop STARTUP!

Update: TESTED in mandrake 10.1 using Gnome 2.6 and it works. If you like this how to rate it! :D

You can place the sound file wherever you want, but then you should use the command
mplayer /path_to_the_soundfile/soundfile
Example: mplayer /mnt/muskuspart/download/Startup1_4.ogg

in the section 4.

Nice how-to. Thanks for posting! :)

I did try it, I created a sound folder in my home directory and I added this line to sessions:/home/imdeemvp/sounds/Startup1_4.ogg
