Are you still in FC1? If yes, how long would you keep FC1 with you and Why? If your still in FC1, when do you plan to upgrade to FC2?

Generally the reasons why people stay in FC1 are: They're waiting for 3D support to be fixed
They're waiting for the dual boot problem to stabilise (which it has)
OR they don't see the need to have to upgrade i.e. it might be an old server which won't really benefit much from the 2.6 kernel.

Or they can't upgrade easily because they are dependent on 2.4 kernel or something else in FC1.

That partition table problem, the dual boot bug, slowed me down, but I have upgraded.

But generally speaking it is a worthwhile upgrade.

I am teetering on the brink of buying a spiffy new desktop PC with most of the mod cons, including lots 'o disk space. When/if I do, I fully intend to go FC2 on that box.

WHY BUY WHEN YOU CAN BUILD IT!

Only if you can be bothered :)

building is much better for a number of reasons, over buying, and it isn't all that difficult either:
1. You get to pick what YOU want on your system and not what some mainstream manufacturer wants you to have.
2. You can build a kick butt system for nearly half the price if you bought from a manufacturer.
3. Its a whole lotta fun and even a bit educational :P

Just gotta make sure everything is compatible. If you don't know what you're doing, there are plenty of websites and books you can use that will take you through the process step by step. I'd personally suggest building over buying any day of the week.

imdeemvp, Mista - when I say I'm going to buy a new PC, the chances are better than good that I will assemble it myself (sorry, should have clarified that). For 15 years I worked for a PC manufacturer (Tech/System Support, IT, Product Development, Engineering Support, etc.) and I've "built" many more computers than I have years - and I'm an old phart. ;-)

Sound advice, though - I usually suggest the "build-it-yourself" route to reasonably handy people that ask for my advice.

Hm, does it mean, that if I install FC 2 I will have some problems to solve?

I really don't like to solve problems any more, because I am fed up with them (not FC problems, but overall problems in life; but ok, my computer hangs all the time ant this is also a problem - this is hardware problem, not software problem, I just don't know what is wrong, I have tried with another parts etc, mobo and some parts have been to guarantee, I suppose I will buy a new mobo soon, but what if it does not work also...; I have used only Windows last months, don't ask why, if I solve problems with hardware, I will switch totally to Linux, almost)
If someone is interested of that hardware problem, then it has been discussed here:

Yes, it does - FC2 is pretty close to "bleeding edge" (not as far out there as Debian-unstable, though), so there's a couple of bugs that haven't been addressed. My bet is that a lot of them will have been ironed out by the time FC3 is gold. This was also the pattern when RH went from the 2.2 to the 2.4 kernel.

I'm finally getting FC1 to where I want it, what ever that is. ;) Maybe I'll upgrade at FC3.

I'm still using FC1 'Stable' because that is what I need - stable.
I would like to be running '2', (2.6) and all of it's advantages, but I watch what is happening and say, not yet.
Maybe I should be running FC2 on another HDD and helping to sort it out. ? . ?

I think FC3 will be better.

What I do is have 4 partitions on my PC - Windows 98 SE (soon to be overwritten with XP Pro because it's become grindingly slow - I only play games in Windows, it's useless for anything else), my "default desktop" (was FC1 for the last 6 months, but I just switched it to FC2), my "previous default desktop" (I keep this hanging around for several months - now FC1 - just in case I need to copy anything out of it) and, the smallest partition (6GB) of the lot, a "test install partition" to put various different distros in it to see how the competition is doing.

The FC2 switch was because Nvidia released their 3D drivers for kernel 2.6, plus I've now got it installed on half the desktops/servers at work (and I'd had it on my "test install partition" for a while). BTW, I tried SuSE 9.1 Personal Edition on the test partition recently because it's now a free ISO download, but was unimpressed compared to FC2 - no build tools (e.g. gcc) at all on the one-CD release, plus no GNOME (or slocate or...gulp...Mozilla) !! Good job I use CD-RW's, cos that SuSE distro is next to worthless - not a very good selling tool for their Professional edition really.

I use FC2 over FC1 because it comes with the 2.6 kernel. The 2.4.x kernels didn't come with the necessary drivers for my gigabit ethernet network card. Plus the 2.6 kernels tend to work better with the Athlon64 probably because they include all the newer drivers for the various supporting chipsets.

Also, 2 is bigger than 1, so FC2 has to be better ;-)
