View Full Version : Window managers should be optional

When I install FC3, every time I gotta go edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop and add DESKTOP="KDE" and DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE" there in order to give KDE full control of the system. I find it rather annoying. Can't it be optional during the installation? Surely it whoudn't be hard to build into Anaconda.
I usually install all the packages (the bottom checkbox) so I don't have to deal with missing dependencies while using apt-get (which should also be there by default lol) or RPMfind.
This also installs Gnome of course...
Give people the option to choose, rather than pushing your own preference onto them.
Hope you take my idea into concideration.

I only edit one file /etc/inittab and have this at the bottom. This gives KDM manager and select KDE for GUI and it always remembers from then on.
# Run xdm in runlevel 5
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon

open a terminal and type:
switchdesk kde
and i agree that the person who's doing the install should have the option of choosing their own default window manager. (red hat has always been gnome-centric just like mandrake has been kde-centric.)

You need to remember one thing: Fedora, as a RedHat production, is more geared towards Gnome - it is, in fact, a Gnome-based distribution. At one point, RH was even considering pulling KDE from their distros completely (in fact, their only KDE developer quit over their treatment of KDE). There was such a s**tstorm that brewed up, not only did they back off from that notion, but started distributing KDE in the same packages that it's developed in (they used to break it up into individual applications).

I know that Red Hat are biased towards Gnome. And I know that Fedora in fact is like a "Red Hat Beta", but Fedora is still to some extent independent of RH. You can make your own decisions.
I doubt RH are gonna freak if you add a page in Anaconda that says:
Will you choose custom window managers or use the defaults?
Defaults ( )
Custom ( )

No, it is not. Fedora is an RH project. The fact that it is open to participation from people outside of RH does not change this: RH controls Fedora, hence the ultimate decision as to what is included and how it is configured is completely determined by RH.

Damn....
Well can you at least propose it to them?

You have as much a voice as I do - file a bug/request for enhancement. Personally, I'm not inconvenienced by it: all my computers start in runlevel 3... ;)
