A common problem when people want to run servers is that the firewall blocks the incomming requests. The easy solution is to disable the firewall, but that is not necessary, and may even be a security risk. Just open certain ports.
Some common ones are easy to enable. Main Menu > System Settings > Security Level. You can enable http, ftp, ssh, smtp, and telnet (although I don't recommend telnet, use ssh instead). You can also add other ports if you know the number in the bottom box.
If you use Firestarter (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1435), you can enable even more. And all without editing config files.
I recommend opening certain ports over shutting down the firewall completely, even if you are inside a firewalled network. Better be safe than sorry.
