Not entirely sure I like that choice of cut off points. It's the same one they use for "elderly" when suggesting flu shots. Fedora == flu? That seems cruel. I thought that it was working better than that.

Age joke (slightly edited version)
An old bull and a young one are up on top of a hill looking at a field full of cows.
The young bull turns to the old one and says "Hey! Let's run down there and make it with one of them cows!"
To which the old bull replies" "How about we walk down there and make it with all of them."

Just turned 56 this passed Jan. I like to think I'm entering my "Golden Years". Well, thats better then my son telling me: "Gee Dad, you're over half a century old". That really gets my goat! Got a late start on computers. Didn't even own one until 1999. The computer bug bit me when I got DSL to go along with it. Then I 'discovered' Linux. The bug really took a hold then. I've been infected ever since. I still concerd myself a newbie. Much to learn. But it's all been fun.

How much do you spend for a driver licence on the island?

You can't buy one here in the UK. You have to pass a very strict driving test, most people fail several times before passing. You also have to pass a theory test before you can apply to take the practical test.
The test itself is £39, but you also have to pay for your driving instructors time which is normally about £17 - £24 an hour. Its very expensive all in all to learn to drive.

Ok, here it is also something about it, even cheaper (I think) You pay about 20€-26€ an hour for practical lessons. And you also have to make theory. I have my theoretical examination on friday.

It's nice to see that somenoe wrote a book aboute war here and made some money on it. But I don't really like to talk aboute the war that has been here 8 years ago, especialy not aboute UN ( "blue helmets" we used to call them), it's horrible. This time has passed a long time ago, and now it's the time to make Croatia a true European country.
Now, back to the girls. :) I can see you have a wide range of interests ( computing, books, Miss Europe, History...), it's really great. You should really come here and put this knowledges into practice, especialy those aboute good looking girls :))) If you know what i mean :)

I guess you mean when older men get the sportscar, chase young girls...etc etc...
I don't know myself, I never went through that...I think it is often that men our age now can afford to get the things we wanted as young men. It is mistaken as an attempt to buy youth.
My brother went out and bought a Harley Davidson at 48 ( he also bought one for his wife). I kinda thought that was like a mid-life crisis thing?

Holy Crap! that's expensive. Now-a-days you have to take 2 classes. The first one is maybe 50$ for the 3-4 weeks, the 2nd one is...i'm not sure. The written test is included. So is the drivering test. I think the card is only, 20$ Then you get a different one on your 18th b-day, one where you can actually lawfully carry more then 1 passanger.
Good luck the both of you!!!

Here in Michigan we got a 3 step process to getting a license (kinda like aa but for driving)... Get a lvl 1 where you need a parent or guardian in the front seat with you for 50 hours (dont know how many ppl actually do that though) then a lvl 2 where you can drive on your own but not between midnight and 5 am (dont know y exactly, but its the law) and then on your 17th bday you get an all out license and can drive whenever you want. Before the lvl 1 though you gotta pass a class and "range" test (basically you do circles in the parking lot, practice parking, and going in reverse). Its not too bad all told, though i think my sis (who is on her lvl 1 right now) may possibly be the worst driver Michigan has ever seen (and i've seen some bad ones)
As for midlife crises, oh yeah they exist. I seriously think every person between the age of 40 and 60 in Alpena is suffering a mid life crisis. It's amazing, all these "old" guys (notice the quotes, no harm ment to you 40-60 year olds) doing crazy things. I swear, in the summer there are more harleys and bikes around than there are cars. ITs amazing.
Good luck on your test Ug, hope you pass.

There have been some studies that suggest that there is a hormone fluctuation in some men that can be roughly correlated to menopause in women and that some of symptoms do provide impetous for the stereotypical "male mid-life crisis."
There is also a second component in which (for both men and women) the person actually has to deal with the physical manifestations of the aging process. It simply becomes impossible to dance the whole night away whilst slugging down prodigious amounts of Jim Beam. (The next morning is even less glamorous than before...)
The third ingredient is the world-wide marketing strategy that's been prevalent ever since mass-marketing became a fact of life: younger, prettier == sexier
Throw all of that together and you start getting the sense that you've lost all that vim and vigor (plus not being "sexy" anymore) and that your life as you knew it is over. So the stereotype comes from men trying to recapture that feeling of youthfulness and regain that "sexy" edge - hence the Corvettes and young blondes.
I could go on about some palentological studies that suggest there's also an evolutionary pressure (spread that seed around to make MORE progeny), but that's left for future discourse.
(And, the unfortunate thing for me is I seem to be in the first category. yuck - I've had fun and this is not fun.)

I hate to disabuse you of yet another notion, my lime-sucking friend, but I started having the symptoms when I was 41. The hormonal influences (if I remember the studies correctly) are not all that dependent upon physical age - there were quite a few factors, such as general health, and (supposedly) documented cases of men experiencing the hormonal changes as early as their mid-30's. The average was actually around 47/48, with the median being slightly higher (50ish?).
In other words, YMMV... :D

While I appreciate your optimisim, I'm afraid you'll find that the whole business world is like that, even those that "embrace" FOSS. Remember, a business is in business to make money - usually by any means possible.
HOWEVER, yes, it should be done legally and, if the business is supplying goods to consumers, they really should take into account the consumers' desires, not ram junk down their throat. Doesn't always happen - Microsoft just got caught, that's all.

I think the higher you go in the user-knowledge chain less and less people stay with windows, but the U.S. i think is much more windows dependant than Europe. Perhaps I am on the wrong continent.
I'm not sure what to expect from Longhorn except that it will have added features that will take a little of the pazzaz out of using Linux.

Some of us didn't want him, either... but that's a different topic.
I think the distribution is just showing that the people with time and enthusiasm, which is most evident in the early- to mid-20's, are the people who "hang out" on forums like this one. And the occasional "old phart" who thinks that they should be 20-something...

Actually, I'm not surprised to find a broad age range. FOSS offers many things and attracts different people for different reasons.
Oh, and thanks for not using 'l33t"

In Germany I think you also have to be 21 to rent a car. But maybe I am wrong.
I rented a car in germany when I was 20 and had no problems.
How much do you spend for a driver licence on the island?
Pretty much the same system as Ireland, so by german standards it's basically free! Apply for a provisional licence (learners permit) at 17, costs around €60. Apply for a test and when you pass you get a licence - that costs about €40. Not bad when you consider that it costs nearly €3000 in germany and they don't let you loose really until you have it finished!

58 - is that old? Doesn't feel like it, except when I'm trying to get out of bed in the morning.
I've been using computers since the days of punched tape, when you'd send a set of code sheets off to be punched up and get the results of the job the next day. I've coded in machine language, COBOL, FORTRAN, BASIC, C, C++, and now I'm just a hobby user. Maybe I am old, after all.

62 tomorrow. Interesting that anything over 49 is old. That's all relative. As a teen, anything over 20 was old. The older we get, the younger everyone else seems to be. I like what linuxmad just said about learning. When I decide not to learn something new using my age as the reason, it'll be time to cash it in, I think. Learning something new keeps me young. Well, er, sorta. If you stop looking for the horizon, there will be no horizon.

Hey now 62 is not old. I'll be 21 this month and I think it's great that we have such an age difference on the forum. When you get to where you can't do things for yourself then you can say your getting old, but until then keep on trucking :-)

I must say that I am suprised. I am a recent convert to Linux, and it so much reminds me of my old days with TRS-80's, TRS DOS, MS DOS, etc. I really thought that younger generations would be thoroughly turned off by the archaic nature of "typing" ;)

I'd like to think that I'm getting better with age, oh well....but at 47 one starts to wonder.
Just thinking...I was born 'last century' and back then was wondering about the year 2000. We live like kings and queens, look at all the wonderful science and discoveries (Mars & Saturn), and lets not forget the toys, like FC3. Whenever I get down a bit, I remind myself
how well off many of us are. Making it last is the hard part.
