I'm running into a problem with my installation that prevents me from running a few games. I use an Apple Computer ColorSync 17" (Also known loosely as AppleVision 750/850) which is based on a Sony Trinitron. The issue at hand is that the monitor does not have a fixed vertical or horizontal sync range. If you have a look at http://www.everymac.com/monitors/apple/applevision_colorsync/specs/applevision_750.html you will notice towards the end of the specifications:

640x480 (31.5-34.97 kHz Hor. Scan, 60-66.67 Hz Ver. Scan, 50 DPI)
800x600 (37.9-46.9 kHz Hor. Scan, 60.31-75 Hz Ver. Scan, 62 DPI)
832x624 (49.7 kHz Hor. Scan, 74.55 Hz Ver. Scan, 65 DPI)
1024x768 (48.4-60.2 kHz Hor. Scan, 60-74.93 Hz Ver. Scan, 80 DPI)
1152x870 (68.7 kHz Hor. Scan, 75 Hz Ver. Scan, 90 DPI)
1280x1024 (64.3-79.9 kHz Hor. Scan, 60-75 Hz Ver. Scan, 102 DPI)

How do I import this information into my X11 configuration file so that each mode of resolution uses the correct sync rates? X11 in what I have seen so far assumes the monitor has a fixed sync range which doesn't help me. Quake 3 Arena requires 800 X 600 resolution to be available, but at the moment I've disabled all resolutions except 1024x768 so that my monitor functions correctly. One side affect of using a Sync Range too low on this monitor is a lack of brightness. For example, X11 sets the default range at 70, whereas the monitor can go up to 74.9. The extra 4.9 makes all the difference between watching a movie and seeing dark splotches and seeing proper lighting.

Anyways, if anyone knows how to set this up that would be great. Oh, and older versions of RedHat always used to be able to probe the Monitor as an Apple ColorSync. I noticed it's not even listed anymore. How odd.

since the older red hat versions worked with it and the newer don't, it could be because they switched from xfree-86 to xorg. you might check to see if xfree-86 still supports this monitor (or for a work around in xorg.) your best bet is to check the forums on both sites since it's an issue that would seem to be specific to that.

Try using xvidtune - run it from a terminal and you can tweak each resolution and get the Modelines that can be inserted into your xorg.conf file.
