Situation is as follows - during Ferdora CORE3 installation card was reckognized and played sample sound.
When I logged for the first time - no sound at all. Here is what I did after many reboots (for kernel params try/guess) and in console mode /no arts or other sound daemons running up/

-2. Googling about the problem
-1. Reading Fedora forums
0. Uprading kernel to latest one _681
1. Checked mixer settings - all up
2. Tampered with VIA DXS sliders in mixer settings - all up
3. Tampered with dxs_XXX = [1234] and ac97_quirk=[12] module options - no success
4. Tampered with acpi=off and acpi=noirq kernel options - no sucess
5. I even disabled my sound card in bios - rebooted - removed config from kudzo and the enabled - rebooted - no success /frankly I was feeling quite stupid during this procedure, since I usually unload and reload modules when I try to figure what is the problem/

And I still don't have sound. All sound apps work but no sound at all.
Any ideas what is going wrong? I read about simmilar problems everywhere.. sadly..

May be my problem is solved.. however I will buy another external card - this integrated audio drives me nuts.
So what I did is - downloaded development alsa tree installed, then removed modules and started with the new one - no luck.
Then I disabled in /etc/modprobe.conf all about sound /specially the lines about restoring mixer settings/ and inserted the module. When I launched aumix - what a suprise - all sound was NOT muted. I removed the modules again, checked that they are removed (all snd_xyz and soundcore..) inserted again snd_via82xx and ... again no-sound and agian sounw was _not_ muted.
Did it again and this time - sound in mixer was muted. I unuted PCM channel only and voilla - I have sound. The interesting thing is that channel VIA DXS is controling the volume - not Master or Mono Master.
Sound is choppy
I tried severa options like ac97_quirk ... btw if set to 0 .. there is no sound but mixer is not muted.
What suprises me is that sometimes when I load modules there is no sound but mixer shows that right after initial loading sound is not muted. I got sound only when after I load modules sound is muted... which happens after several load - unload. May be some reset problem
Again - I am long time linux user may be more that 10 years ... so there is no stupid errors like /etc/modprobe.conf sound install option issuing alsactl restoring my sound and so on... all sound related stuff is commented and .. :-) file saved...
BTW I am running my kernel with acpi=off
Still choppy sound.
Some one have an idea... why I have to unload and load modules several times before I can have sound???
Well.. Happy New Year to everyone..

you could try this thread. it may or may not solve your specific problem, but it'd be worth a shot.

nope.. my problem is different. Indeed I wrote a little script that at boot time checks mixer settings and if they are all 0 which means that drivers loaded ok restores sound. Sadly drivers have to be unloaded/loaded several times before they start to work correctly
Will some one recomend a good external card..

just about all soundblaster pci cards from creative are supported. i've used 3 or 4 different ones from them without any issues.

It is time for Audigy....

This is my problem exactly. Except, I'm so new to Linux that I don't even know how to remove and add modules...though from this post, it looks like no big deal, since that doesn't work.

First,...what is the deal here? I've found this problem all over the place but no agreed workaround, much less some kinda fix...but I digress.

Secondly...I will by an external card...my sound sucked anyway...but if I have to mess with these modules, etc. then I won't bother with Fedora at all. Besides being confusing, I also can't actually do it. I went to the ALSA page about installing the mod. folllowed the directions but when it came time to do several "modprobe" commands, I got "no such command" returned. So question is, if I put an audigy card in there, will this be noted on boot up or do I have to go thru this all over again?

Friends, there are REASONS that many are resistant to switching to Linux...and I am smack dab in the middle of one. If this is just a problem with a crappy built in sound card, however, I will forgive the Linux gods.

Thanks.

It is usually something strange and unexpected. My sound was HORRIBLE until I ran kmix from the sound and video, click
advanced and then turn off IEC958.

So, what does it do? I have no idea, but suddenly I had great sound and before either nothing or horrible sound. Strange.

If you were thinking of an Audigy niki, I can confirm that the Audigy 2 ZS worked straight out of the box in Fedora 3. No problems at all.
Just make sure you check alsa mixer if you want to use 7.1 sound. Wasted 4 hours on that problem :)

is upgrading udev a cure for this problem too? or should i get a non-built-in sound card? Creative? CMI 8738 3D 4-channel ? CMI 8738 3D PCI 6 channel?

Creative Vibra 128 PCI? is this one gonna work?
I choose these soundcards because they're only the ones that i can afford.. (and you can also assume my real age here, LOL) how about the first 2 sound cards i had mentioned, is it ok to get those? since there are conf files for CMI8338.conf CMI8338-SWIEC.conf CMI8738-MC6.conf. how about Creative Vibra?

sorry, im just a newbie here in fedora 3.. a former 3 yr - red hat 9 user.

Thanks for this - it seems that IEC958 is a stumbling block for this via onboard audio

I have the via8cxxx, upgraded my kernel to 2.6.10, (from source at kernel.org) no problems at all?

not surprising udev killed my designs on using my own kernel the generic linux style :\

the problem is IEC958 Capture Monitor being on by default -

to anyone else interested you can mute it with gnome-volume-control and it will enable your sound

Yep, I had to fiddle with mixer settings in the beginning too.

On a side note, does anyone know how to record while listening with this card?
