I have now had Core 2 installed for 2 weeks and I have to admit I am close to going back to Mandrake, just too many frustrations and bugs with core 2 .:(

What are you having problems with?
I've been using Fedora Core 2 for a couple weeks now and I've found no bugs.

Oh, there's plenty of bugs alright - but what do you expect with a "developer" version of the system that's undergone some pretty radical changes? I guess a lot of people don't remember the tons of "whoopsies" when everyone switched to the 2.4 kernel...
If you absolutely need something rock-solid and don't have time for tweaking, you'll need to stay away (for the time being) anything that uses the 2.6 kernel. It's pretty much that simple.

I was using it on my main machine , I have gone back to Mandrake 10 on that machine . I have installed Core 2 on my test machine so I can iron out the bugs and issues I have, of which there is a few .I do realise that Core 2 is bleeding edge and do expect some bugs but I have the feeling that Core 2 has been a bit rushed and maybe one more RC was required even if this would have meant a slip in the release calender.

Perhaps, Daniel Owen's article posted yesterday (June 2, 2004) on FedoraNews.org would be of interests. Check out

Good article - that's exactly what I'm talking about...

@KiwiNZ: you're not alone....
But on the other hand, i've tested some other distros, too.
And the result - from my point of view - is a nightmare:
Test-System:
Processor: PII 400
Memory: 256 MB
Mainboard: MSI 6151 with onboard E(N)S 1371
SCSI Controller: Adaptec 2940
GFX: ATI Radeon 9200se AGP
RESULTS
Suse 9.1:
-> After installing ATI 3.9.0 drivers, several changes in desktop modifying freeze and lock up the system step by step
-> the installed Zip 100 (SCSI) returns "not a valid block device"
...
Mandrake 10.0 Official:
-> POSITIVE: 1200.00 FPS with ATI RADEON 9200 without installing drivers, and the soundcard (ens1371) works without problems
-> NEGATIVE: network-connection via german provider (adsl-config) is nearly impossible for newbies. Without package addon, a newbie has no chance...
I've downgraded the "working system" to RH9 to be able to do my job. (X_64 system)
But the test-system will be FC2. We must find a way to solve the occured problems.
Humans are allowed to make mistakes. But human beings have an advantage: they are able to find a solution for made mistakes. With more feedback exististing about non working configurations, it's easier to find a solution for the problem.
Maybe you're able to help - exactly with your problems - to make Fedora Core even better ;)

I intend to persist with Fedora on my test machine until I have resolved my problems.
I ilike a challenge . I also like the look and feel of Fedora.

After struggling all weekend with Core 2 on my test Machine I surrendered. I could not resolve the following...
1. Could not quieten the fans even with ACPI on.
2. It refuses to see any of my USB Key drives.
3. My printer refuses to print anything other than plain text .
4.The scanner is just unknown to it .
5. The odd light brown smudge around the letter L I have no idea how to fix.
6. Sound , the card card is detected , when I test it it plays the test sound then it gets amnesia and forgets how to play.
7. The ejecting problem with CDs/DVD's that was present in core1 is stiil present in core 2
8.I also noted that with Core 2 installed I had to reset my router quite often , this is strange as it is "independent " and I have never experienced this with any other OS including Core1.
I removed Core2 and installed Mandrake 10 Power Pack and all the Hardware etc was detected and works great without intervention. The Fans are quiet as , sound works great as does the Keydrives and CD's etc mount and eject as they should.
I now have Mandrake 10 on all my machines and they work great . But I am going to put Core 2 back on the test machine and keep battling as I do like the look and feel of Core 2 , with the possible exception of Gnome 2.6 , I still havent made up my mind over that .
My Test machine specs are .....
Compaq Presario P4 2.53ghz
512mb Ram
120 GB HDD
128MB MSI Nvidia GF4 MX
Onboard AC 97 sound
Realtek NIC
HP 200i DVD writer
DVDrom
HP PSC 2310 printer, scanner, copier
HP L1925 LCD
This a different test machine that I earlier used I wanted to check if it was machine specific , and these problems followed me to the new machine .

I just installed FC2...the sound card was detected as....82801BA / BAM AC'97 audio... but no sound with the sound test.... I opened Kmix and went into "Advanced" button
disabled "3D control switch"...and increased "headphone" slider and now sound!

I have installed Core 2 on my test machine again , I have resolved the sound, printing and scanning issues .
I have not yet resolved the Fans , Keydrive issues but working on it .
As for the light brown smudge around the letter L , frankly that has me beat .
Other than that , core 2 is humming .

Try changing the font and/or font size and see if that does the trick. What you might be running into is an artifact of the screen resolution, the monitor, font-rendering, anti-aliasing, and the font itself.

My FC2 is just flat smoking on my machine:
Gigabyte 8IHXP
Onboard Creative PCI 128 sound card
Onboard RealTek NIC
512mb ECC RAM
Onboard Promise ATA 133 controller
20gig Maxtor ATA133
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64mb
Other than my sound resetting to low on every boot up and not being able to erase a CD/RW, well I'm just flying. I feel lucky!

I have changed Fonts , replaced the LCD with a CRT , different resolutions , antialiasing on then off .Used only Vesa drivers, nVidia drivers .
Stood on my head , sucked my thumb , kicked the cat all with out success .
That smudgy letter L just wont go away .
But hmmm its a mystery to me .

After struggling with FC 2 for some time now I have been unable to resolve
The Fans constantly running, Keydrive issues and the frustrating light brown smudge around the letter L .
I have also found FC2 to be just buggy , little things that bug ya , like the occasional disk that wont eject when the previous 23 did , and xmms crashing or web pages that just wont render , when they did fine earlier in the day.
I have surrendered and gone bake to MDK 10. Its a shame as I like the look of FC2 .
Hopefully FC3 will be better , has anyone installed that latest test release ?If yes what is it like ?
Cheers

Did you install the official nvidia driver?
(this driver works great)
Have you you used up2date/yum/apt to upgrade packages????
(many packages have been updated since the official release)
Check http://www.fedoranews.org for a description of the package upgrades.
When you went from FC1 to FC2, did you upgrade or do a fresh install?
(i recommend a fresh install)
Have you checked the output of dmesg?
I realize that the above steps are pretty routine, but it can and will make a difference.
hope this info helps...

I decided to give FC2 another try , I installed in my main machine Updated it and I have resolved all the problems I had been experiencing , AT LAST!!!!
FC2 is running fantastic, the Kernal update I did seemed to do the trick.
Now I am a happy Kiwi
