Is it worth having antivirus for what purposes?
For a Windows client - yes
For a Linux machine - no
Not using Linux as root, and SElinux is a much better protection.

I believe there is a tool called something like "Clam Antivirus" which is used for servers that have Samba (Windows) Shares, or for mail scanning. Not sure if it is a workstation tool or not.

it will be for a home server running fedora core 2 doing windows shares, bit of webserving - mysql... other odd bits.

You may want to give Clam a try then. It sounds like you will be storing Windows files that may get infected via shares on your Fedora Box. I have no used it myself, but I hear that many use it on mail scanners and such. Hope it works for you.

For this purposes I can recommend this :
http://www.antivir.de/en/produkte/antivir_server/index.html

It is a little, but very powerfull german antivirus. It is not opensource, but free as beer.

There's clamAV packages available in fedora.us: See www.fedorafaq.org/#installsoftware

You only need antivirus in linux if you're going to be sharing a lot of files with windows users, to protect them. There are no virus threat to linux. So if you run a mail server, file server or similar for windows users, install clamAV, if not, don't bother.

I have been using BitDefender(free) for quite a while http://www.bitdefender.com/index.php to scan my downloads/mail
...F-Prot always stops working after a few scans, not sure what is going on with it, but it has happened everytime I have installed it.

What viruses are there for linux? Are there any? The only thing I ever heard about is the one where a valid user on a system could execute code to become root without the root password. But even that required a valid user account to gain access to the system.

there is a good article in the Dec. issue of Linux Journal that talks about antivirus. "Beating Spam and Viruses with amavisd-new and Maia Mailguard." here is the link:http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7427 It might answer some questions for you :)

What you're talking are some possible exploits in non-patched programs/libraries that might allow a local user to gain temporary root access. These exploits are typically found and patched very quickly. As you noted, they have to actually get onto the system first to take advantage of them.

ritey - so im getting the picture that viruses wont really be a major issue, seeing as Norton anti virus is running on all the windows machines - outlook scans emails for viruses before dowloading or uploading to the isp and that the outlook data files are only stored on the server, instead of the actual individual emails... the only way that i can see viruses getting in to my server is if i actually downloaded something a bit dodgy using it, rather than downloading it on one of the windows machines.

I use F-Prot. I then downloaded the frontend for it called QtFprot. Made link for it and put it on my desktop. It's great and has a very easy GUI for the options you can choose from to scan and remove virus from your machine. Also has a one button click to get the latest virus definations downloaded to your machine.

I dropped my Norton subscription when ClamAv found a virus on my Windows partition while Norton was running, and Norton missed it. ClamAv found it, removed it, and sent me mail message to root.
Since then, I no longer dual-boot, but connect to windows boxes with my home network. So, I have ClamAv scanning the mail to protect the Windows boxes, and I don't have to pay an annual subscription.

your lucky if you get a year out of a windows install to actually need to renew your norton... my xp appears to just die after about 9months or just go so slow that its just time for a format and reinstall... thus giving you another years subscription
