I have a USB scanner made by Mustek that was working fine in Gnome (distro is FC2) until I switched to KDE. In Gnome when I opened the Gimp there was an option to import/acquire the image from the scanner, and it did it perfectly - never needed to install drivers unlike Windows, when it took ages to get it recognised. The Windows drivers for this thing are on a very dodgy website with instructions in Chinese, requiring 5 downloads and renaming of all files. Chances of having Linux drivers are about nil. In KDE neither Kooka nor Xsane (?), which seem to be the default scanning software, will recognise it. I've found that it is listed correctly in the hardware browser, but it still doesn't work. Any idea how I can activate it?

Does it work if you use your root-account? Simply go to a terminal and switch to super-user, then start xsane. My scanner doesn't work when using my normal user account. I still haven't figured out what the problem is. :(

Well that worked, sort of. I couldn't find Xsane anywhere in the menu, but I logged on as root and started kooka, which has just done a perfect scan. When I went back to the Gimp and tried to acquire through Xsane it said no devices found, even as root. Very weird, but at least it works now. Thanks for that.

You may need to unplug/replug your scanner in. I was having problems with my scanner under FC2. It would be detected by sane-find-scanner, but when I started xsane or kooka, no scanner was detected. Once I got it detected, I would have problems with other users besides who my current user was when it was plugged in.
