I upgraded to the newest kernel that Synaptic sees with the default repos, 2.6.9-1.681_FC3, and sound now works.

Great you got sound. What about your usb 2.0 ?

USB2.0 is still not working for me with a 2.0 flash disk (I checked that right after checking sound). But there's been a lot of e-mails about it on bugzilla, so I'm hoping that gets fixed soon. And the really good news is that it doesn't look like the new kernel broke anything that was working.

Quick add on - my sound works too now with that kernel version and that sound system. Only to muddy the waters - I installed an 'alsa' update between that kernel patch and testing my audio again, but it is definitely functional now. Excellent.

I'm brand new to the linux (fedora C3) world. But i have an VIA AC97 Soundcard in my computer too and i have no sound. What is updating a kernel and hwo do i do it. Step by (idiot proof) step if you could please. As i have never used anything but windows, dos, commordore64, amiga etc.

Because i just used synaptic to check for the new kernel, and it would seem that I already have that Kernelt version that you're talking about.

But i tried re-installing it, then running the sound card detection, and the test sound still wont play. Wht do i do now?

To install the kernel, it's easiest to use synaptic. How do you get synaptic, you ask? Use my how-to at http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26997

Allright, I have Synaptic and I tried all that and I have the latest Kernel, same version as listed above. Still finds the correct card as it always did, but still wont play any sounds (Speakers are on and all chanels are NOT muted on the sound mixer program).

What do you suggest now? Perhaps a 3rd party driver? How do i install one of those (remember, i'm brand new).

so the test sound from System Settings -> Soundcard Detection doesn't work? Or is it playing CDs that sound doesn't work? If it's CDs only, that's probably due to there being no analog cable running from the CD drive to the motherboard. If the Soundcard Detection test sound doesn't work, try installing gnome-alsamixer from synaptic and make try the sound level settings one at a time to make sure that your sound level isn't set to 0. also, click on the speaker icon in the top right and make sure the sound level there isn't set to 0. this is assuming you're using gnome.

Yes, i'm useing Gnome. And i have alsa mixer and gnome mixer, and both are set juyst fine. Nothing is muted and all levels are set high. I tried fiddling with all those levels and nothing ever changes

No, the test sound doesn't work. It finds my soundcard, and it plays the test file. But no sound comes out. No cd sound, no sound from movie files or Mp3's. Nothing at all.

everything comes in just fine under windows though not that that matters.

Kanuk, if you've installed KDE, make sure the Kmix settings are also maxed, since they are set to minimum by default and affect Gnome settings.

Nope, no KDE isntalled

Personally, i'm baffled

Maybe if i tried installing KDE I'd be able to fix this?

been having the "cycle the first one second of sound" problem since I installed FC3, (had this problem with 2 for a while as well), updated the kernal (which just seemed to keep breaking my eth0/nic)

one thing I did notice, during boot it does the harware init, when the sound is disabled on the MOBO it goes audio then disable IRQ10, when the sound card is enabled it's the other way around.

it's that darn AC97 onboard sound thing thing that a lot of people seem to be having trouble with.

Thanks for taylor65!

I had a sound problem, and the reason was that I didn't have cable installed. Thank you taylor for pointing this out!

I think we have the same problem.. im on dual boot with winxp/red hat 9 before.. and everythin was goin fine.. but after FC3 - sound card detection isn't workin - no sound heard at all.. tried the mixers whatsoever.. and still nothing.. the last thing i have not yet tried was the kernel update.. but for me it is risky coz im still a student and i have projects to do.. im using VIA technologies VT8233/A/8235/8237/ AC 97 sound card which Sound Detection picks snd-via82xx as the module - but NO sound.

I would like to know what's yours and wanna know the steps in case you had enabled it already. Thanks!
