View Full Version : USB devices not detected on boot (FC3)

Some of my USB devices are not being consistently detected at bootup. In particular, my ADSL modem (I am using the eagle-usb driver), and a Canon N650U scanner. Interestingly, a Canon printer and Iomega CDRW never cause any problems.

This is annoying as it means my internet connection is not started by the eagle-usb init script (as it can't find a modem to use!) and I have to manually unplug then replug the usb cable for the modem to be discovered.

It also means the scanner's permissions are not properly set (although a line in rc.local is a quick fix for that one).

The strange thing is that sometimes the devices are detected and everything goes smoothly. This is happening with both the original kernel-2.6.9-1.667 and the updated kernel-2.6.9-1.681_FC3.

This is not a problem I remember having with either FC1 or FC2.

Anyone else having similar issues?

have you tried setting some static settings in your /etc/fstab for the usb-devices? try that.

i read some days ago in a magazine that the 2.6.8+ kernels are somewhat buggy with usb-devices due to some reconstruction of the kernel by torvalds. he admitted that there are usb-problems with newer kernels and that they will try to correct the stuff or switch back to the old usb-handling. furthermore, the iocharset and some other entry needed to be placed in the fstab for usb devices, otherwise they will be only accessible as read-only devices, no matter what you do.

i am a bit frustrated atm due to these problems, because i am too suffering from usb-probs on another box (not using fedora) due to the above-mentioned problems.

Thanks for this idea bunsen. I will have a look at this when I get a chance.

Is it USB 2.0? I've not seen anything work on 2.0 yet. Works ok on a 1.1 port though.

i haven't had a problem with usb devices being detected, but i have had problems with programs not being able to find the devices. (i.e. games not finding the joysticks ( http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?p=146290&posted=1#post146290 ), printing apps not finding the printer, etc) udev and selinux seem to be at least partially responsible for some of the issues involving hardware and various apps. i disabled selinux and that fixed a couple things,(not the ones i was trying to fix at the time, but i'll take what i can. lol)
