I have a Gateway Solo 5350, and when I try to change my resolution from 1024x768 (native) to anything smaller I something that looks like this:

+----------------------------------------------------+
|XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
|XXXXXXX+-----------------------------------+
|XXXXXXX| the screen extends
|XXXXXXX| out so this is half of my
|XXXXXXX| desktop
|XXXXXXX| the other half is hidden
|XXXXXXX|somewhere there=>
|XXXXXXX+-----------------------------------+
|XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
+----------------------------------------------------+
the outer box represents my physical LCD screen and the inner box is the virtual image the results when I try to change the resolution. The X's represent the parts of the screen which cut off completely without even backlighting. Is there a way to fix this, please help.
Also I am going to ditch this laptop in awhile, so does this happen to any other laptops. I need a laptop that can start up in confortable resolution like 1024x768 or higher than shrink down to alteast 800x600 to play games. My favorite kind of game are the old games and I like playing them in wine. Is there anything else I need to submit,
O and final things, I am using xorg, and have a i810/i830 (notsure) graphics card.

When you installed fedora did you select the proper video for your laptop?

i have noticed this is a very common problem when the proper video adapter is not selected and configured properly.

find out what exactly its in your laptop and you will problably need to reinstall and you can go to system tool >hardware browser >enter password >video card (here you can see what you have for video adapter you may have)

My Laptop is fine. I installed FC2 and the Video Card was detected but the Screen wasn't. So I just installed(since I remembered what my max res. was for the laptop) a Generic LCD @ 1024x768. After that, I had no problems. I can basically go to any resolution from any resolution with ease.

So you shouldn't have any problems, as long as you've got drivers for the Adapter.
