My home DSL on verizon has been down for 10 days now after the huge storm that hit Maryland. My power came back after about one day but the DSL is still out. What I want to look into is some way to get a backup access to internet from my house for cheap for such situations. Two ideas I have are:
1) verizon dialup (my POTS was up for the whole duration of the storm), I found the closest dialup number and it works (I get modem tone)
2) tethering a smartphone's i-net access to my network
Of course (2) would be faster but I don't have a smartphone right now but just a plain old clamshell Nokia that can't be tethered. I tried dial up but it was always failing the CHAP set of the authentication.
If someone has experience with dialing into verizon dialup with KPPP on Fedora I'd like to hear it. I also tried making a dialup profile in my ipcop router but that failed the authentication too. I think verizon has something in the authentication that's not set up in the default ipcop scripts. I've run both ipcop and KPPP in debug mode and on both I see the failure to connect is CHAP related.
Otherwise, I'm been doing all my internet access by going to wireless cafe's and restaurants which gets tiresome (plus I don't want to do banking that way)
