SNMP is a tool to monitor the status of equipment remotely. It is useful in large organizations. If you wonder about it, then you don't need it.

One use of SNMP that is useful for even single users is to monitor traffic through your router. There are a number of SNMP router management programs that let you see what's going in and out of your router from a screen on your workstation.

Google for "router snmp monitor" or similar.
