because there is no samba4 release version. They are all alpha versions.

But, are you actually using samba4? Or are you using the stable version of samba? If you aren't using samba4, then you can remove the samba4 packages.

You have to install samba4, and it can be installed alongside version 3. You have both installed on your system, and it is bringing in the updates to samba4, and those updates conflict with the version 3 install you also have.

The developers are trying to install samba4 in parallel with samba on F17. That's alpha18 of samba, not F18. :) There's a new build in koji that privatizes the conflicting libraries, but it hasn't been pushed yet. For now, I'm using "sudo yum --exclude=samba4*,libsmbclient,libwbclient update" to get around the problem.

I'm curious what others see from this command:

I poked around in yum history and checked koji package builds, and it appears that a normal "sudo yum update" on April 6th picked up the winbind library from the April 4th build of samba4. I wonder if I'd have notice sooner if I was using winbind? I grabbed the correct libwbclient package and reinstalled it just in case.

I'm surprised the samba4 library can replace the samba (version 3) library without yum complaining. If you have any problems, I see that the old version is in the stable repo. So, "sudo yum downgrade libwbclient" gets the matching version back. My previous exclude list will keep things intact until they straighten out the samba4 libraries, I hope.

Interesting. I wonder if the libwbclient package is the same, or close enough that it doesn't break winbind functionality. I also wonder if getting it without asking for it is a yum bug, or a samba packaging bug. I added a comment to bug 814451 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=814451).

there seems to be 2 different issues with samba4 within the past week.

For awhile I was getting the samba4 conflicts, and was able to do a yum remove samba4* and solve the problems. Now today the issue with the dependencies has cropped up once again. So it appears that they did just change something in the update within the past day or so.

I have had so many dependency issues with F17 updates, that I don't do a regular update anymore.. all of my updates for the past month have had to include the --skip-broken parameter :(

To get yum to update for me on a 64 bit system without trying to bring in a lot of 32 bit libs.. I had to exclude samba4


yum --exclude=samba4* --skip-broken update

Don't even think about trying to remove libwbclient unless you want to remove a few hundred packages :( So it appears like we are stuck with this issue for awhile

Hi, I believe I still have this issue, even with recent updates:

I suppose you also have to remove all the samba4-* packages... The names of the 3.6.4-84 version packages is samba-*
