View Full Version : Fading windows

Inspired by this Flash animation: http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/, I was thinking wether it is possible, to fade windows in and out, when starting / closing the apps. That would look really slick!

This will be possible by using SDL ;)
-> http://www.2dgame-tutorial.com/sdl/fading.htm has a fading example (Bitmap inside a window)
With this technuiqe (SDL) it is possible:
-> to get the gfx-area BEHIND a window
-> to get the gfx area of the window
-> crossfade both areas
... and this in both directions will result in FADEIN and FADEOUT...

Now I recal... there's fading when you Log out! :p Don't know what technique is used there...

Hmm That would be pretty cool..hopefully it could be done without munching resources like that other OS probably would, no matter how hard anyone tried not to make that feature a resource monster.
Off Topic: It's very interesting that Novell's Bussiness oriented Desktop environment use Gnome and Firefox when Suse itself uses KDE and Konqueror I believe. It's good to see Firefox plastered on there though its good marketing.

You can get real shadows and transparency now on XFce4.2. You might want to fill out a bug request for a new window fading plugin. It sounds like some nice eye candy but I wouldn't use it myself since I like maximum UI performance and have disabled all fading stuff. http://xfce.org
