It is a nice desktop background, but isn't it missing something? :) Maybe they're hoping we'll all forget the release name!

Nice - as in lame enough for a grade-school project ? It doesn't hold my interest. It's the 'plain oatmeal' of images.
I'm not in love with the 'Verne' desktop image either but at least it's got substance.
Dan posted some stuff a lot better IMO.

I believe it's a placeholder, the final background isn't done yet. edit: there's an artwork schedule at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F17_Artwork/Schedule . I'm not sure they're strictly sticking to it yet, though.

I do agree, Dan has posted several backgrounds that are better than the Fedora backgrounds, But, the Fedora art team has set some guidelines they try to follow, one of them being that the background not be too distracting, etc...

So following their guidelines, they come up with some decent artwork for the Fedora releases.

I understand, and I don't generally object to the Fedora artwork choices. Some are quite good like the F10 KDE seething planet. Then there are things like the Penn-Dutch birds in a bush with vertical stripes (yak).

Just a personal opinion, but it's possible to use some bold colors other than blue, and to include substantial image content without becoming too distracting. The 'trick' is to make the texture so that desktop icons (Gnome3'ers will want to google that) are clearly distinguishable.

FWIW I really like a lot of Scott Draves works as wallpaper., esp his "electric sheep" project.
