View Full Version : Alpha LiveCD i686 can't restart from GUI

If I log out as Live User, at the login screen upper right hand corner drop down menu includes: Suspend, Restart, Shutdown. Restart and Shutdown appear to not work. I haven't tried Suspend.

Anyone else see this?

After each attempt, I get the following log entries in "messages"
Mar 2 12:43:26 localhost gdm-simple-greeter[1380]: CRITICAL: dbus_g_error_get_name: assertion `error->code == DBUS_GERROR_REMOTE_EXCEPTION' failed
Mar 2 12:43:39 localhost gnome-session[1341]: DEBUG(+): GsmDBusClient: obj_path=/org/gnome/SessionManager interface=org.gnome.SessionManager method=IsInhibited
Mar 2 12:43:39 localhost gnome-session[1341]: DEBUG(+): GsmDBusClient: obj_path=/org/gnome/SessionManager interface=org.gnome.SessionManager method=IsInhibited
Mar 2 12:43:39 localhost gnome-session[1341]: DEBUG(+): GsmDBusClient: obj_path=/org/gnome/SessionManager interface=org.gnome.SessionManager method=IsInhibited
Mar 2 12:44:15 localhost NetworkManager[516]: <warn> Couldn't retrieve BSSID properties: Method "GetAll" with signature "s" on interface "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties" doesn't exist

Interestingly, if I log back in, and go to the same upp right hand drop down and chose Shutdown - then either Restart or Shutdown in the resulting dialog - the computer restarts or shuts down as expected.

Can't restart from the loginwindow with it installed to disk either. This is without a yum update so far so maybe that'll fix it.

I'd love to know how you got all those options. On my x86_64 livecd-to-hd desktop system the only logout choice I get is "suspend", which thankfully does nothing but return me, eventually, to the login screen.

On my x86_64 machine, which also does gnome-shell and not fallback experience, I have no options on the upper right hand corner for Suspend, Restart, Shutdown. I *HAVE* to login in order to have those options. And that's not how F16 is at all.

I had the same issue with the x86_64 XFCE Live CD. On the desktop, I didn't have the choice to shut down or restart, only to logout. When I did log out, I only had the option to suspend.

Edit: After installing F17 XFCE to disk I don't have the shutdown or reboot options on the desktop. Logging out gives me the options, but they don't do anything.

I use the XFCE desktop version of F17 alpha, I have the options logout, suspend, hibernate when I'm logged in. Hibernate works fine, suspend worked never correctly on my computer.
If I enter halt in terminal it tries to shutdown, but I have to press the power button myself.

I have the same problem. Issuing the commands "reboot" or "shutdown" from cli as superuser works.

Attached x86_64 screen shot with gnome-shell. I believe this is a gnome-shell difference, rather than arch difference. But as you can see, there isn't even a menu option for getting the restart, shutdown, suspend, hibernate options. I have to login to use the GUI to restart, almost like it's a security issue now to restart a computer...

I agree. I see the same thing. I don't know if this a bug or by design! Quite strange (foolish?), if it were by design!

it's a bug.

Yes, I agree it is a bug and not by design. One of my F17 VM has the Power button which allows me to restart or power-off as expected. I have another F17 VM which does not have this Power Button and only shows the Accessibility button (same as chrismurphy screenshot).

The difference between the two VMs is, the first VM uses the yum update approach from F16 to F17 while the second VM uses the anaconda installer with one of the alpha DVD iso. I suppose the "good bit" from F16 survives in F17 .
