You have to install the lame package to play mp3 files.
open a terminal and type:
su -c 'yum install lame'

>su -c 'yum install lame'
I get

Error Downloading Packages:

You are right, that's not working. Sorry.
It seems the rpmfusion repos can't catch up with the fast pace of the f17 package updates.
I'm afraid all we can do is wait :-(

F14 is no longer supported.
If you try to switch from F14 to F17 rawhide, you probably face lots of version issues.
Or has the lame package not been updated since f14?

I found a workaround to fix the mp3 problem.
This has worked for me, but I can't tell you if it is gonna work for you. I strongly recommend you not to do this, because I don't want
you to blame me if it's not working on your system.
But if you are really desperate for playing mp3 and don't want to wait until the repos are synced or up to date or whatever...
One could (of course only theoretically):
Download the following rpms directly from the rpmfusion website (assuming you have a 64bit system)

http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/development/x86_64/os/lame-3.98.4-1.fc14.x86_64.rpm
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/development/x86_64/os/lame-libs-3.98.4-1.fc14.x86_64.rpm
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/development/x86_64/os/x264-libs-0.0.0-0.31.20110811.fc16.x86_64.rpm
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/development/x86_64/os/mjpegtools-libs-2.0.0-1.fc16.x86_64.rpm
and install the rpms with rpm -ivh <package-name>.rpm
After doing this, one could install ffmpeg, the gstreamer-plugins and vlc (if not already installed) via yum.
Yum wouldn't complain about some packages not being found anymore.
After doing that, one could get an error message like can't connect to default audio device when opening mp3 files.
One could then remove pulseaudio (of course at ones own risk) and mp3 playback should work.
After that one could reboot the system and even with 'pulseaudio*' reinstalled via yum mp3 playback should be working.

But, as I said, this is only theory because I would never encourage you to do so and I don't guarantee it will work for you.

I've never installed the lame package - gstreamer plugins and/or vlc always seem to play mp3s. I am usung 17 and playing mp3s in Rhythmnbox and vlc.

You don't need the lame package to PLAY mp3 files.

lame is the package for the encoder. If you wish to create mp3 files, then you would need it. but to play mp3 files, it's not necessary.

To play mp3 files, you need the gstreamer and ffmpeg packages from rpmfusion.

But you still can't install gstreamer and ffmpeg at the moment beause yum complains that some of the dependency packages on the mirror servers don't match.
I did another install of fedora17 a week ago and there were no problems installing gstreamer and ffmpeg.
But the updates i did the day before yesterday prevented networkmanager from starting, so i didn't even have wired network anymore.
So I downloaded the nightly build from Feb 28 and my network worked again (even my Broadcom card worked out of the box).
Now there are problems with the mirrors.
But I see it was my error to assume you need lame to pay mp3 files.

I gave up on playing around with Rawhide a long time ago. It's just too much work to stay on top of things as they change. I usually wait until there is a beta version of the next Fedora release then I dive in.

The past few releases, I have been jumping in on the alpha release and things seem to be fairly smooth, but with this F17 release, I'm not so sure about it. It seems to be one of the most buggy releases I have seen in a very long time.

The Fedora 16 Alpha and Beta releases worked quite well on my machine.
The best method to solve problems in Fedora is to wait till they get fixed. Let's wait a few days and we will all be able to install our stuff again.

@DBelton: I totally agree with you. There's a lot of work to do to make Fedora17 a usable distribution.

yea the only reason i installed 17 cos i broke my f16 and gnome 3.35 works a lot better with my ati card than gnome 3.2

No, Fedora 17 is not a distribution, it's a test version of a future distribution, there's a big difference
