I have a fresh install of F16 (I'm new to Fedora, but not linux), and it's up to date. My laptop's integrated webcam works perfectly for video, but it does not capture any audio. I am at a loss of where to go from here because I can't even find the modle number of the mic! The webcam does not show up in lspci, so I can't google that...

From what I saw in the forums, almost every mic problem was solved by unmuting the mic in alsamixer. I ran alsamixer, pressed F6 to change from the default (with only showed "Master") to "HDA Intel", my sound card. This did not show any capture levels to adjust! It's like my system thinks there is no mic!

How do I find out what microphone I am using? What should I google from here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if a web cam mic would show up in ALSAMIXER or not, but don't forget that with a lot of controls, in alsamixer you often times have to use the right-arrow key to scroll to see all the slider settings. I would bet that pavucontrol (PulseAudio Volume Control) would be a better bet for detecting, displaying and controlling a web cam mic though. Explore all the tabs and configurations in pavucontrol carefully as some settings can go unnoticed if you don't.

Cool, one step closer, thanks! It showed up there, and I noticed that 'recording applications' were using a monitor of my mic, which was always flat, instead of the mic inteself. I changed the monitor to be the fallback, and then the recording application switched to the mic itself, and it works.

Well, sorta. The mic is so quite, the application doesn't hear it. pavucontrol shows audio getting sent to the application, but it's hardly anything. So now it's a mic boost issue. Thanks!
