When I am logged onto my system (FC2) as my normal non-root account I get ~20MB core dumps every minute or so and it is filling up my partition. How can I tell where they are coming from and how do I stop them? I do not see programs failing or seg faulting, so, I am confused.

Hi, the name of the program that us segfaulting should be one of the first fields in the message.
Are you using any Java apps.? Java segfaults all over the place on my system.

Get a newer version of Java - this was a known issue in early 1.4 releases and has since been corrected.

Are you sure? This was with j2sdk_1.4.2 download just last week from java.sun.com.
The amd64 and i386 versions from blackdown do the same thing.

Then I'd say you have a problem - I (and several co-workers as well) haven't had any problems with Java on RH or Fedora-based systems, either with the Sun JDK or BEA's JRockit (which we use on RHE in our production environment). I usually use the "tarball" installation, since I want to put it in a very specific place. Is your crashing on a "stock" installation, or have you been messing around with library versions?

keep in mind that we are talking specifically about amd64 here. I too have never had any problems with Sun's Java on ia32 (i386) RH or Fedora systems.
Yes, this system is completely stock FC2.

Does anyone know how to look in the core files to find out what is making them?
I am new and have no idea. The files appear to be binary when I look at them in a text viewer.

Actually, you never specifically mentioned it. My assumption that you were talking about x86, which means I need to read the fscking topic header better.
Heh. Sorry 'bout that, Chief...

I haven't had any problems with Java or anything else segfaulting. Where are the core files located?

the core files are located in the directory where you started the program. Make sure to set
"ulimit -c" to something appropriate.
tomcate 4.1.x makes java segfault consistently here. (not with 2.4.27-rc5 though...)
I just finished setting up a second x86_64 box. I'll try again on that.

I hadn't tried anything beside a couple applets to make sure it worked. I'll try to install Tomcat on it and duplicate your errors.
