FC2 to FC3 sound & CD problems

First the CD problems. My KsCD gives me the following message
CD-ROM read or access error (or no audio disc in drive).
Please make sure you have access permissions to:
/dev/cdrom
I am a single user (pete). I changed the ownership of hdc & hdd to "pete" as was suggested in anothe thread I can't find now. I get the same message with a music cd.
I can access data disc OK, but if I re-boot the ownership reverts back to root.

Second sound problem. From "system-config-soundcard I get:

When I "Play Test Sounds" I get the sounds loud and not distorted, but the left speaker has a very high level of "hash" or "White noise" and the right speaker has very low level of the same noise, but plays some "ogg" files OK. This setup worked fine in FC2 & M$

I also have a VIA "card" on the mother board, but it has too low a volume output in Linux to be usable. This was also true in FC2.

Not sure what the sound issue is, but in FC3, the static /dev directory has been replaced by its
dynamic counterpart /udev, Great!!! :-). FC2 supports both /udev and /dev. I've been using udev in
FC2 to control mapping a particular USB drive/camera to a particular /udev device. Anyone
who has multiple usb flash storage devices, and that connects/disconnects them in no particular
order, /udev is a great solution.

Not yet upgraded to FC3 myself, but have been reading the release notes.

Oh and regarding FC3, it appears that udev needs to be upgraded after FC3 is installed. More on that here:

Back to your /dev/cdrom problem, check the /var/log/message logs and see what /udev/... device
got mapped to your cdrom.

As xorp said, you need to update udev for CDs to be accessible to non-root users. As for sound, looks like the via sound chip has a kernel issue (I submitted a bug on it and they said it's a kernel issue).

Thanks all. I ungraded my udev and that seemed to fix the CD problem, but not the sound. I am aware of the VIA problems which is why I bought the SB sound card.
I went to the Soundblaster web site. They have no driver updates for this card. Since it worked in FC2 and in Windows, it has to be a FC3 problem. If I set

in "system-config-soundcard" I get scratchy sound, but I do get sound. How do I make this setup the default when I reboot.
Is there an alternate driver for this card?

Back again. I upgraded everything. I bought some DVD-R discs. SAME PROBLEM!! Wrong kind of media. Right now I am burning a CD-R disc. No problem. It certenly doesn't seem like FD is ready for prime time.
