Hi

I have been using Linux (FC1 and 2 and Suse) since June 2004.

The accomplishments are many - all the ordinary ones of a new non tech /non geek user.

But the mistakes have been many. Some really bad.

Can I suggest we have a new forum where we can put down the mistakes we made (and possible corrective solutions also) so that other don't repeat it and end up in trouble.

This suggestion is prompted by the following:

I recently had some display trouble while using Suse. I wanted to reload FC 2 but needed to back up my data and could only do so through the CLI which I did. Soon I did a complete fresh instal (wiping out all data). I had backed the data up onto one other computer and onto a CD too from the back up computer. For this transfer I used A flash drive because networking too was not working.

To copy usuing CLI i read up the man (insufficiently in retrospect).

I reinstalled FC2 and copied all the data back 1 cd worth . And POW only the folders were copied not the files in it. I cross checked all the back ups and same thing.

So here I am upset and sad that I lost a lot of valuable work because of a stupid mistake.

I guess I used an incomplete CLI command and hence this result.

So folks watch out and cross check you back ups before doing something like this.

HENCE THE SUGESSTION FOR "A DON'T REPEAT THIS MISTAKE FORUM"

For the forums kind consideration

I think that the How-To forum is the place for exactly this things.

I can see how such a place on the site would be good as a compliment to the how to section.

Most questions here are how to do something, not how not to. Your warnings to others are appreciated, however.

You could put your example it in How To with a helpful title like "How NOT to do your reinstall backups". Also mentioning the correct way to do it would help too.

I know it doesn't fit very well, but there is not a lot of how not to do something.
