I have a two-fold problem. After updating to kdm-4.5, my system (Fedora 15) fails to start kdm and I get the message that: "no greeter widget found, check configuration". Checking /var/log/messages shows:
kdm_greet[some number] GreeterPlugin Classic does not exist
Indeed, this is true. It does not seem to exist anywhere on the system. So, the problem is not that kdm is simply not finding it. The solution would seem to be either:
1) downgrade kdm
2) update all other kde packges, particularly the kdebade-kdeworkspace package that seems to fix this problem for a lot of people.
Since I can no longer have a graphical desktop, I managed to edit my grub.conf file so that I could boot to run level 3. However, my other problem is that I cannot get connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot (I have a laptop) anymore. I suspect that the problem is that something is going wrong with identifying to which hotspot I would like to connect, and using the --debug option provides no additional information. I have tried a number of different variations of specifying SSID, frequency, and hotspot MAC address. The command does not complain, but
iw wlan0 link
says that there is no connection, as does /var/log/messages. In fact, /var/log/messages shows that some attempt is made ... but finally says something about 'disconnected'
So, ... I am stuck with the system in this state. Unless something can be done, I will have to try to recover my users files and reinstall the system, which seems rather drastic. However, Fedora does not appear to be set up to be used in command line mode. Most, if not all, posts seem to assume that one has a graphical desktop. My situation must happen all that often. Any help would be very welcome.
