bob
13th September 2011, 07:52 PM
It is once again time to choose the release name for the next Fedora release. Potential names will be accepted for consideration beginning September 13th (in other words, NOW) through September 20th.
Please submit your best ideas to the Fedora wiki at the address below:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Name_suggestions_for_Fedora_17
Please note that you *must* follow the instructions and guidelines at the page listed above if you want your name to be considered. For instance, there must be an "is-a" link between the name Verne (from Fedora 16) and the name you suggest. That link must be different than previous links for Fedora release names. Also, we ask that you please conduct the required searches for brand and trademark names that might cause us problems.
Read the full guidelines at the wiki page listed above, where you can also find full schedule details for the release naming process.
For those of you interested in reviewing the history of Fedora release names, there is an appropriately named wiki page for doing so at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/History_of_Fedora_release_names Please try to pick a name that is fun and creative. Don't delay... do it today! We all want an awesome name for Fedora 17!

It's a shame that you must be a Fedora Contributor to have an account on the Fedora Account System so you are able to make a F17 naming suggestion.
Otherwise I would have suggested "Urso" since Jules Verne is born in Nantes, and Camilla Urso (a female violinist which was uncommon in these days, living 1842–1902) is born in Nantes, too.

Thanks for the tip, from reading https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/AccountSystem I got the impression that FAS is for Fedora Contributors only.

I think the Fedora Account screen captcha was designed to help with naming inspiration

Hmmmm ... Okey dokey.
Lessee ... How about "Scrap Iron"?
The "is-a" relationship is explained here ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIvrqiS1CUc&feature=related

If i could only get past that pesky screen captcha registration then Tommy would be my choice.
There is a research article (http://dvice.com/archives/2011/09/researchers-dev.php) on making life from tungsten in the news.
So....
Verne (http://www.flickr.com/photos/45591573@N04/4561325616/) is a robot and so is Tommy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1365658/).
This (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2421219016) is maybe a better link for Tommy. :p
I don't suppose that would get quashed for copyright ?

DBelton

Actually, Beefy Miracle was submitted.. (Along with Bacon, ****ton Falls, and Rocky Ripple)
But.. To be totally honest, If they do ever select Beefy Miracle, I would have to switch distros or skip a release.

Okay, for those who can, here's an email from Jared Smith
The election for the Fedora 17 release name is about to begin.
The Fedora community has submitted quite a few suggestions for the Fedora 17 release name, and that list has been narrowed down to the final eight potential names. In a couple of hours, the election will begin and you'll be able to vote on these names and assist in the final selection for the successor to Fedora 16 ("Verne").
This vote begins 4 October 2011 and runs until 10 October 2011 at 23:59:59 UTC. Other important facts:
* We are using the Range Voting method (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_voting).
* Ballots may be cast on the Fedora Elections System at https://admin.fedoraproject.org/voting. *
If this is the first time you've used the voting system, you might want to read the Fedora Elections Guide, currently located at http://pfrields.fedorapeople.org/documents/elections-guide/
* In order to vote, you must have a valid Fedora Project Contributor Agreement (FPCA) on file and be a member of at least one non-CLA group. Please don't hesitate to log in at https://admin.fedoraproject.org/voting/about/relnamef17 and vote for your favorite names today.
Thank you to everyone who helped by contributing names for consideration and reviewing the names for the final ballot.

Sooo.. Looks like I will have to skip the F17 release to save the embarrassment when I tell my friends what OS I am running.
Seriously.. Can you imagine telling people that you run "Beefy Miracle" ? They are going to wonder if you are talking about a computer or ummmm.. something else.. :D
Just imagine the lines now..
"Hey babe.. Wanna come by and check out my beefy miracle?
<<SLAP>>!!!
"But.. But.. I was referring to my computer operating system!!"

The jokes are so obvious that hopefully, folks will refrain.
On the bright side, Fedora releases aren't usually called by name (though this one might change it).
Sigh, I watched How I Met Your Mother last night, and the thought of what Barney would do with that name....

The jokes are so obvious that hopefully, folks will refrain. ... Fat chance of that. Any group of folks, such as this, hungry for entertainment, will almost assuredly get directly to the meat of the matter. Which is only natural. As active community members, we all have a steak in the outcome of the deal.

This name is well timed, after Gnome 3's shock we're going to need a beefy miracle boost for F17.
But it must be in blue.
Perhaps they could use some of the spam i get in my email account to get their design started.

Hmmm.
In a (somewhat) safer context, it seems like the terms Grub, Yum, GnomeBaker and "free, as in free lunch", are going to make a bit more sense to the casual observer. <..:p..>

I just want to know.. how does Beefy Miracle tie back to Verne? It thought there had to be a link back to the previous version in there someplace.

The "link" seems to be that it was previously submitted for F16. Yeah, good reason...yeah....
DBelton
11th October 2011, 11:55 PM
I wouldn't consider that a link.
Maybe they are saying that F17 is going to contain the "miracle" that will fix Gnome 3 :D
I do however wish to protest.. This name is very discriminatory.
What are the vegan/vegetarian computers going to run?

Alternative song: (hey, I'm retired, it's a rainy day, got nothin' better to do....)
Gotta put bread on my table
Gotta beef up my display
Don't need Windows ol' chopped liver
I need some prime filet
So I put on my fedora
Slammed a DVD into my drive
And sat back in amazement
As that computer came alive
There's F17 shinin' at me
Lookin' like a T-bone with fries
Sizzlin' and done to a "T"
A feast before my eyes
And then I rebooted
Learned something so empirical
If grub2 ever finds Windows7
It'll be a Beefy Miracle!
(Chorus)
Grub2 showin' nothin'
This sure ain't satirical
My data's all on Windows
I need a Beefy Miracle!
(2nd. verse)
My boss is standing over me
Around here, he's a god!
He wants that data back right now
And he's got a cattle prod!
He's fixin' to use it on me
In my sphincter oh, so spherical
Grub2 just won't open Windows
I need a Beefy Miracle!
(Chorus)
(3rd. verse)
Lyin' in the hospital
With a pain in my caboose
Gettin' salve applied to me
By a nurse who's name is Bruce
I'm tellin' him my story
Makin' it sound so very lyrical
He says he'll make it feel all better
And give me a Beefy Miracle!
(chorus)
Yeah, I know... find ANYTHING else to do! Okay, nap time....
