Hi all,
If anyone wants to try these, I've found a good howto here (http://personal.eunet.fi/pp/joakim/nx7010.html#xorg).
Drop shadows are rendered reasonably fast. Transparency is very slow but looks very good! See attachment :D

Thanks that worked, slow but it works.

Maybe rendering will be faster after installing the Nvidia (or ATI) drivers.
I'm gonna try that later... although I'm no expert in X.
Another note: You do not need toexport PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/pkgconfig/

There is a RenderAccel option for the proprietry Nvidia drivers that apparently helps a lot with the speed. Check the /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README file for more info.

The transparency and drop shadows works in XFCE 4.2 rc1 at normal speed, even without the nvidia driver.

Gnome will be very slow, while it doesn't affects XFCE's speed. Just comment the lines in your xorg.conf and Gnome will be normal again. Have fun ;)

I was able to run it, but it killed my ability to run a 3d app (quake 3 or glxgears)... so i had to remove the Composite line in xorg.conf
Anyone else have this problem?

I had drop shadows running for about 5 seconds with XFCE before my computer crashed. Oh well, I can wait till it's better ;)

Try compiling Metacity without compositing and rendering enabled. I found the advice it in a forum thread I can't find now. Once I disabled these in metacity, the performace seemed to jump back up....
Anyone else see this?

Looks great, thanks. Seems to run at full speed here: NVIDIA drivers 6111, Kde, on a P4 2.4G

According to the howto that Pigpen posted a link to the reason why Gnome is so slow with compositing enabled in x.org is that Gnome itself does not currently support this feature.
Given that fact and the posts from other folks re how much this slows Gnome down. I'll wait thanks.

Hi pengan, I had followed you link to make transparency work. But when I do ./autogen.sh, it give me the following errors. I am using fedora core 3 with kernel 2.6.10-741. Can someone help. Thank you in advance.
[root@localhost xcompmgr]# ./autogen.sh
