I would like to soon try FC3, however, I'm a student and don't have a lot of time. My /home is on it's own partition, however, I'm going to have to re-install all my apps right? I have Oracle, JAVA, and a hole gang of PIC microprocessor programs installed and running smooth and am afraid to have a whole new set of problems when reinstalling them. Then again... the geek in me can't resist trying the new version.

Is there any way to install applications such that they don't need to be reinstalled when upgrading the system?

Most apps will upgrade when you do an upgrade, although upgrades aren't always very smooth. When I tried to upgrade my laptop it killed everything, all my files were still there but all of my program went whack, including both gnome and kde (kde more so than gnome). I ended up backing everything up and starting from scratch. At the same time I'd say wait another week or two, there will be more repositories (for apt and for yum) and more fc3 rpms, right now they are pretty scarce.
