View Full Version : FC3 dissapointment?

Is FC3 a dissapoinment? So much was said, so much was done. I know I can only participate in helping others in this community. I am not a programmer nor a computer guy with a master or degree.
FC3 may have nice looks and stability but it up to this day, it lucks a lots of multimedia support. I thought with the intregration of Totem the multimedia was going to improve but it remains the same. Music and DVD does not play at all. Installed Ogle and I get dvd playback. Rythmbox does work!
My computer does not shutdown I get "acpi_power_off call" in pc and laptop. Everything shutdown properly with FC2 but not in FC3 and I am using same hardware. I have to manually turn off my pc (my hard drive :( ..).
Many of you reported yum.conf promblems. And others have other issues. I like all the security enhancements but I am a little dissapointed.
What is your dissapointment?
Added: I am working on finding my own fixes.

I will probably be happy when the Wiki and FAQ get up to date. But, until then I am dissapointed because I can't get yum to work how I want it to.
btw, Tell me how you got rhythmbox working!

All I did was copy my music to my hd then opened rythmbox and it asked if I want to import my music and I selected my music folder and there it was ....all my mp3's.
Open terminal become root and type: gedit /etc/yum.conf and copy this to your yum.conf:

i am not so disappointed with my personal fedora3 version. it worked instantly, the only issues were the typical media-things (mp3 not supported due to licensing and audio-cd not starting) but as i use it primarily as a working machine, i am not that much bothered. it is rock stable, yum worked at once.
i do know that many are frustrated users due to music-problems or installation issues, but most of these problems seem to be realted to either bad burns, some simple hardware-issue like a missing module that can be installed afterwards. different is the partitioning problem many have. i am not yet sure if this is related to some bad package or due to specific user problems (wrong partitioning, hardware (e.g. sata-drives).

My only peeve with fedora is the lack of a wide software selection. I dont really consider this to be the fault or fedora or redhat, but it can be frustrating at times, especially when im coming from debian.

My disappointment is with the things that are broken that used to work. I have everything fixed now except for sound and rhythmbox (and no, it's not the volume issue, but the two problems may be caused by the same thing). Here's the list of things that I've found broken so far:
1 - Installation, auto partition gave error, had to manually partition (no fixed, I reported to bugzilla with FC3t3)
2 - Installation, didn't figure out which partition was Windows XP and which partition was Windows Restore (not fixed)
3 - Couldn't play a CD, couldn't burn a CD/DVD (updated udev to fix)
4 - USB 2.0 doesn't work (not fixed, reported to bugzilla)
5 - Sound is messed up (not fixed, reported to bugzilla)
6 - Firewire not active (fixed)
7 - gpg keys for yum (not a bug, but why not have the keys installed?)
I hope this is it, but it's only been 1 day since install.

Well to add a little contrast, I'm going to disagree. I've had nothing but success with FC3. It installed without a hitch on my XFS software-raid partitions. All my hardware works - including dvdrw, tv decoder and nvidia gf4. Multimedia works great since I installed the mp3-enablers and libdvdcss/libdvdread. Yum worked, hadn't used it before so the 'new' repo style didn't phase me. I use apt instead, because of synaptic. k3b's "root-only" issue from FC2 has been fixed - awsome.
I've read quite a few posts in the forums of those who are having trouble with certain hardware or software. This is normal in any OS, especially Linux; which due to its very nature lags behind in its support for newer hardware. It is a constant work-in-progress, and I'd say overall, it's progressing for the better.

I've had great success with FC3, xmms mp3 support is a simple rpm install, mplayer gives all the multmedia options you could desire. Firefox 1.0 is a superb browser (the update from the preview release gets rid of the annoying intermiittent lock-ups, The new yum update seems to work (although I had to remove the initscripts update since it caused kudzu to fail on hardware check at boot time).
I've installed a whole load of other packages to enhance my system, and now feel that everything is superior in FC3 to windowsXP apart from 3D gaming. (Though even without hardware support for my X800, xmame-x11 runs all games at full frame-rate (using Xv windowed mode), similarly for emulators like generator (mega-drive) and zsnes, and even my usb playstation gamepad is recognized)
A bit of work is required to install various plugins and multimedia packages to bring the system up to full functionality, but it's really not difficult, and ensures the latest updates are installed.
The best linux distro so far imho, I've spent the whole week on this system, and have nothing but admiration for the work that's gone into creating a superb os.

Don't upgrade libselinux! You cannot load Security Level (system-config-securitylevel) dialog from the main menu after the upgrade. It's one of available upgrades that came out today.
EDIT
OK, this was a shout in a wrong place and in wrong form. This bug was really annoying because I needed to use that thing and I couldn't. Sry, it is not connected to the disappointments of FC3 in it's release state, my fault.

I find FC3 a great improvement over FC2. On one upgrade FC2-FC3 I can't get my nVidia graphics to work. On another system, I did a fresh install and the nVidia drivers work great so I think a fresh install may solve my problems on the other system.
Overall, the extra polish in gnome-2.8 makes the upgrade worthwhile for me. It's a fine desktop...
Once all the 3rd party repositories are up for FC3 (come on fedora.us!), it'll be a great linux platform.
yum works well 'out the box' but when will we get a GUI for it? Until then, I'll use synaptic/apt-get.

Yeah.... FC3 isn't what I hoped it to be. I think the programmers have to keep the bugs in it. Otherwise one wouldn't had to buy RHEL any more, if Fedora could replace it so easily. Still, I managed to configure a stable and pleasant desktop environment with FC2. It needs a little help here and there, but the FAQs will be available in a matter of time. But to stay on-topic, I have a list of compliances too....:
- Changing file-types associations, I can't find it any more in FC3. I have to open each mp3 manually in xmms.... Damn you nautilus.
- No multimedia support whatsoever, why do you let me install Totem, while I can't play anything with it.
- Anaconda, installation works great for me, but I can't customize it enough. Also, when I don't want printing support, anaconda still install foomatic....
- Still discovering minor bugs, e.g. when you login and have a cd/dvd in the drive, nautilus wont start.
FC3 has lots of improvements, and with some tweaking here and there, you don't have the worry about the compliances. It hasn't a great out-of-the-box feeling, but I hope it will get more usable enough when all the tutorials and faqs are online.

I do admire the work of the developers but there is one common feeling amoung fedora users and that is to have fedora have a longer life extension. FC2 was released about 7 months ago and now we have FC3 . Why not have FC2.1 or something similiar like slackware, mandrake, suse, and others distros.
Do you remember windows 98 and was upgraded to windows me and what a fiasco that was. Now I just found another problem setnumlock in gnome does not install and security level can not be change as petz point it out. This is not a problem in other distros but we as users have the right to go from beta to stable release and not just stay in beta mode all the time.

You have the right to download and install an os for free, that's it, if you prefer commercially available products which (supposedly) offer support for each and every bug/problem you encounter then go ahead.
It's too easy to complain, and when it's a free product I get annoyed by the whingers.
Suse is version 9
Mandrake is version 10
Slackware --- whatever
Something doesn't work for you -- wanna contribute to fixing it?
Go ahead and ask for help, but don't slag off what is basically a free product.
Go load up XP, and be happy .

Hm, this thread should be renamed to 'Notes and issues of Fedora Core 3 ' or something like that to prevent misunderstandings. Disappointing doesn't mean disappointing here I guess, because we all like Fedora and don't want to make down anybody and anything. It's like pointing out something. We all want good for Fedora (and even in overall meanings) and appreciate all that great work done with it.
Please, lets stop this arguing and do something to fix these misunderstandings by renaming this topic or locking it or something else... . Just please don't argue over those things any more.

When will people learn that a product is a product regardless of whether or not the maker decides to charge you for it, and a bad product or bad components of a product is simply put bad period. Stop whining that people do not worship any and all OSS offerings regardless of quality simply because it is free. Also the old addage of learn to program so as to fix the problem with the developer(s) is pure insanity seeing as how not everyone has the skill or the time to learn a programming language, those that can indeed should everyone else SHOULD indeed complain about bugs [and provide pertinent info about said bugs.]or bad practices on the part of the developers seeing as they are the ones who merely USE the given product.
Really I think it would be better if you didn't complain Sideways.
For the record my only problems with fc3 are yum and its demonic hanging issues, I have not had a chance to try the repo files though so this issue may be already fixed. [at least they apparently got up2date to ###### work after an eternity of it hanging.]
And the fact that I can't browse my windows machine using nautilius even though it clearly can see the machine it won't let me login, yet I can get in with xffm (from xfce.) but I can't actually interact with files as far as reading them goes... [that last part is an xffm bug I know.]

As for my complaints - I write how-to's all the time, answer questions on forums all the time, submit bugs to bugzilla, install and report on test releases. So I feel I have a right to complain when redhat takes a working product, like gnome, and purposely disables things, and takes things that work in FC2 and break them in FC3, and says that bugs that I reported in test releases are fixed but they aren't fixed in the stable release.

I dont think anyone here is arguing. We are have a cross-talk with pro's and con's of the latest release. Taylor65 is right. One would think the K3B was going to be fix, ntfs support, and multimedia was really going to be improve. If linux was to go prime time and head to head with windows all those issues have to me taken care of before there's a new release.

Well hear is my disappointment-
I started this FC3 trek by going to my favorite ftp site (where one can usually find a stable version of their favorite flava) at ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu, proceeded to download FC3. Silly me out of sheer excitement and utter lack of concern (previously never had any reason for concern beyond minor details) began to install FC3 on VMware 4 as a testbed. In doing so neglected to check the md5sum. OUCH!!! Like many of you I'm sure, I just wanted to see what the latest and greatest was if any. My expectations were high needless to say I was impressed with FC2 (if the truth be told I still am).
The first alarm was during the minimal install (desktop) when it prompted me for FC3 install cd 2, it would not accept it even after it passed the pre-installation media test (all of which passed accept disc 4). Oh wait there is more.. I said to myself "serves you right fool that's what the md5sum is for". This time, I checked the md5sum, re burned the iso image to a cd with the same results. the perfect formula for 5 useless cds =5 coasters.
A chain is only as strong as the weakest link which for me was FC3 install cd 2.....
If at first you don't succeed try try again- blah. I went to the following website for the second go around :
http://fedora.server4you.net/fedora/core/ -I was very impressed with the download speeds, seemingly not even 1 kb was throttled back, awesome!! At any rate I did my homework this time, I matched the md5sum of the iso images with the checksum provided by the mirror, the Fedora Core website and each individual iso image consecutively. Before my faith in FC3 was completely renewed, as a precautionary measure I decided to perform media test on all the newly freshly burned installation cds. The first cd failed!! now I'm thinking to my self "what the F.A.Q. is going on here" ran the media test on the remainder rather pessimistically. However, to my surprise with the exception of install cd 1, they all passed the media test. I figured ok if all of the md5sum checksums match and the media tests passed with the exception of the one then it must have been a fluke. Wrong 4 cds later... For a grand total of 5 "Memorex all use black cd-r discs" and 8 Fujifilm cd-r discs, FC3 left me with only one thought which due to it's rather obscene nature I will refrain from sharing (it's a good thing that cd's are cheap these days except the black ones).
On a whim with nothing but cd-r discs to lose I thought I would humor myself and try installing from one of the alleged install cd 1 discs that failed the media test- FOUR TIMES!!! Once again to my surprise I was able to install it on VMware 4 test box. Go figure ....
Next I'll try to install FC3 onto the hdd of one of these lucky Linux candidates, hopefully more pleasant surprises are in store for me in the future, but for now, in the interim I am disappointed =(.

My biggest disappointment with FC3 is that once again, cd burning/scsi cdroms are broken on my system. I am using a scsi card (Diamond Fireport 40) using the sym53c8xx kernel module, a Plextor Ultraplex 40 and a Plextor Plexwriter 12/4/32 cd-rw. Now, I can read data cds just fine, but ripping audio cds and copying cds doesn't work. It took a combination of regular, testing and development updates to finally get my cdrom drives working properly. I am sure that eventually I will be able to burn cds, but it stinks right now. At least I can still boot into my old FC2 installation.

I found these major problems with FC3:
- the "acpi_power_off" problem (my laptop relies on acpi, I can't turn it off) - having to press a button to shutdown is a major calamity... ;)
- someone messed up with the ATI Radeon 9K drivers - using OpenGL crashes the video card after a random while. This never happened in FC1/2;
- what is SELinux good for? (Yes, I've read the papers, I mean _really_ good for?)
- Gnome 2.8 doesn't seem to refresh the folders automatically like it used to in FC2 (a Gnome problem, or maybe a configuration issue?)
Apart from these, FC3 is a great distro! Evolution is now much better than in version 1.x, OpenOffice is now better, the inclusion of XFCE is very nice, KDE menus still doesn't work like they should (may it be a graphics driver problem?), the development libraries are updated, life is good. For the lack of decent multimedia support, I went to freshrpms.net (that now has a x86_64 section) and installed the recent VLC 0.8 and mplayer. I play DVDs, audio, divX, mpx, about every format on Earth.
Still it seems to me FC3 launch should have been delayed a few days. A lot of work is being done on it. Only a few days after its release, there's about 200 MB of updates to do on a freshly installed system. Things are changing fast... :)

I think this is release is a bit of a mess compared to FC2. Yum is now an enigma instead of this amazingly useful tool that it was in FC2. I now also experience occassionaly lockups with the new nvidia drivers. I could go on, but I think they rolled this out before some of the useability concerns were addressed.

I just installed FC3 last week...not many problems...nvidia required a little editing on a couple files. THere appears to be a little problem with mounting cdrom but that is intermitant.
I used YUM right after the install to do check-update and then update. It took about 40 minutes, and it did not appear to hang or freeze witht he default settings.
Obviously I haven't tried everything yet, but first impression is that it is pretty much like FC2
