intel drivers have generally been poor. i use the Opensource Nvidia drivers, i have no problems with those. Nvidia update there drivers far quicker than ATI do.

G%$%D$&$^%M it! :D
That logon screen has got to be one of the ugliest I have ever seen :Y
I hope they will allow you to keep the current design, or change it if you wish to.
Also, I sure hope that they make the Empathy contact manager and online accounts an option rather than enable it by default.
I sure don't want things like that enabled by default.

actually, i think its better than the ugly out of date grey GDM , the New one you see there has probablly less Code/lines in it than the Grey one also

well, black/white is so.. well.. 80's.
I actally prefer color since I paid money for a color monitor. :D
tox

Grey doesnt exactly have colour in it . i think you can install lightdm which is what Ubuntu is gonna use, i dunno how stable it will be though but my guess is they wont package the out dated GDM your used to
---------- Post added at 02:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:19 PM ----------
by the looks of it, there not going to package the old GDM, the 3.1.x one is the one you see in the screenshot

I guess I can go to using KDM or XDM instead, then.
I finally figure out the easy way to change the butt ugly striped wallpaper in GDM and they go changing it up on me
tox
14th July 2011, 05:40 AM
i think there is a way to change that wallpaper, im sure i saw somethig on the Ubuntu forum on how to do it, i cannot remember what part you have to Edit. maybe they'll use a different wallpaper for F16? i dunno, not that i care to much, i dont look at it every day.
DBelton
14th July 2011, 12:42 PM
In GDM, there is an easy way to change the wallpaper.
su -
(root password)
xhost +SI:localuser:gdm
sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center
*select Background
*change to whatever background you wish
*restart Gnome
But if their new logon screen isn't GDM, I don't know how to go about configuring it. If it is still GDM, I would assume it could be configured the same way, which means it could possibly be changed by tweaking the theme files for it and change the black to something else.

Yeah it's a matter of preference.
Oddly though I can probably take either. GDM is, or was, fairly themable and could be made to look pretty swish anyway but I don't mind the new design.
However, I do really hope there's still a session chooser. I know Gnome is scared of newbies screwing up but geez, put it there even if it's hidden and only accessible via the Alt button...

with this new Login Manager, how does one choose what DE to login to? or does one have to go up the top of the screen to choose that?
Similar to the current login screen, DE switch will only appear if they are installed.

why do you care so much about the blue stripes? your only in that area to sign into the Desktop then you get to view your own wallpaper. when you login. no big great deal if you ask me. by doing what you typed out to change it means more work then you gotta do the same for the next release, i mean why bother? seems a bit ridiculous.

because those ugly vertical stripes give me a headache within seconds of looking at them. :( Look at the stripes for just a few seconds, and then I have a headache that lasts for hours. It was bad enough that back before the beta was released, I actually just went in and deleted that background from my system until I figured out how to go in and change it. (well, I did copy another background over to where it was and named it the same so I wouldn't get errors)
And the way it's changed, it shouldn't require changing for the next release since it's changed in the settings that should be kept.

hi dbelton :), regarding all this debateable stuff here, i tend to agree with detox again. it could be personal preference but as a matter of fact i know you are wrong. Why dont you try and learn to like the wallpaper like everybody else?
to add something: my guess is default backgrounds are the main reason for distro-hopping, so i agree it is better to have a nice wallpaper

Reading my nonsense again i cant believe you take this serious. btw DBelton is my favorit poster here by far (would pay to subscribe his posts as he made me use my wacom bamboo with fedora). Of course by far means just right behind you.

Ouch, that's pretty nasty :(
I miss the old GDM configuration tool where you could change themes and backgrounds as easy as you would your desktop.
I can never understand why this was removed by default but anyway.

I hope they will allow you to keep the current design, or change it if you wish to.
Also, I sure hope that they make the Empathy contact manager and online accounts an option rather than enable it by default.
I sure don't want things like that enabled by default.

im afraid you got no choice since it'll be enabled by default, though you can install/use any DM you like once installed.
to your top post - IMO it looks much better than the ugly Grey one and LightDM that Ubuntu will be using. as i said above once installed you can use any DM you like, though you will not be able to use the old grey GDM i dont think as the new one is still named GDM
just because there enabled by default doesnt mean you have to put your info on or in them during the install process of Fedora16. not everyone will be using Evolution, some use Thunderbird.

I barely use Fedora anymore because the switch to gnome3 rendered it unusable. I have F15 lxde installed (not that it's great or anything) in windows vbox mostly for running python scripts but that's just about it. Linux really needs a decent DE. As for kde, xfce, openbox - been there and you can stuff them as well.
