Fedora 15 KDE vs Fedora 15 Gnome

Hi,
I don't know if this is the right sub-forum. I have Fedora 15 installed in 2 computers with similar specifications. In one of them I installed KDE version and I installed Gnome version in the other. After disabling Nepomuk and Striggi both machines use the same amount of RAM when idle (around 420MB). But I found the applications load faster in KDE than they do in Gnome. Even Dolphin seems to be faster than Nautilus. The KDE machine has even lower RAM than the Gnome machine (2GB and 3GB).
Does anybody have the same impression?

I havent used Gnome3 long enough to be able to make such a comparison but I can say Fedora 15 and KDE 4.6.x runs amazingly well.

Same thought here, I was extremely unhappy with G3, but I'm glad it happened because KDE has came lightyears from where it was when I first tried it.

What are you comparing by the way? The speed of execution of executables? how fast does an application require to be launched? how much time does it take for a desktop environment to start? or something else?

I've ran them back to back on the same machine. The difference isn't huge but it's noticeable. G3 consumes about 5% more processor in an idle state and a few seconds longer boot time with an atom 1.6ghz netbook. Both fresh installs, G3 with its eye candy and KDE with desktop effects as-installed. jmo

I have KDE and Gnome both setup on my computer, and Gnome does seem to have slowed down a little compared to Gnome 2.X

And I agree, KDE has come a looong way.

I have a quadruple boot in my notebook (Win7, Kubuntu. Fedora 15 KDE and Fedora 15 GNOME3).
I like very much Fedora 15, both KDE and GNOME.
In general, I think I prefer KDE, but, in my opinion, GNOME3 is a very modern and useful O.S. too. And it's very nice to look at ...

I've installed KDE and Gnome in both computers because I suspected that "similar specifications" probably were not too similar. I created dual boot in both computers and I found memory usage is almost the same for KDE and Gnome in each machine, in my notebook was even less in KDE.
The main difference I found was in performance, KDE is far snappier than Gnome (i.e. Dolphin is faster than Nautilus for both starting and folders/files reading and listing, LibreOffice was also faster to load in KDE than in Gnome) in both machines.
Gnome 3 is very modern looking DE (animations are very nice) but usability is a very weak point, usually "less usability = better performance" but in Gnome 3 the relation is "less usability & worse performance". I'm going to stay with KDE for a long time. I guess probably only die-hard Gnome fans will be happy with Gnome 3. BTW, there's a lot of excellent applications which use QT4.

believe me....i've given up comparing these two.....:C:C:C
i spent a lot and lot of time in doing that but returned with no result......at all.....:doh::doh:
but i've learned one thing...,run whichever u like at the moment......i liked KDE when i started replying to this thread and now i like GNOME............:C:C:C:C

I'm not picking sides in the Gnome v. KDE rivalry, but here is my experience over the past two days.

I installed Fedora 15 KDE from DVD and could not get HDMI sound to work in a browser. Flash (64 bit) installed and played with no problems, and I had sound in KDE applications (e.g. Amarok), just no sound in Firefox and Chrome.

Uninstalled flash, reinstalled, searched numerous threads about flash problems, made the HDMI device the first priority, still nothing.

Slackware 13.37 had the same problem and the solution there was to create ~/.asoundrc:

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
device 3
}

Didn't work in Fedora.

One command as root fixed it, and noting else was adjusted.

yum groupinstall 'GNOME Desktop Environment'

Now sound works fine in the browser in both Gnome and KDE.

For now, I use KDE4 on the desktop and Gnome3 on the laptop. Until the past two days I had used Gnome3 on the desktop since Fedora 15 was released.

I don't detect a noticeable difference in speed, and I plan to continue using Gnome as the only DE on the laptop.
