First off, I'm a Desktop user, not a developer. I can't program why way out of paper bag. So I try to take the "Easy Button" way most of the time. That means "preupgrade".
The servers must have been clogged, I should have waited, which I normally do, but wanted to see Gnome 3, though I wasn't planning on using it. So the downloads take longer than I expected and the upgrade started, but errored out on installation when it couldn't read the openjpeg-devel rpm.
That left the machine in an unbootable state...so I booted into Win 7 and grabbed the DVD, normally I go ahead and download it anyway before I preupgrade but this time I didn't. I tried using it to continue the upgrade but that didn't work, so I had to go clean install, and choose a custom layout so I could tell it to NOT format /home. That worked and I made certain to install XFCE alongside gnome3.
Well Gnome3 was interesting, and I did try to tweak it to my preference, but it's "not for me.", switched to XFCE (which I have used in the past on the ol PS2), and got it configured how I wanted it easily enough. I did have to do some tweaks to get HDMI audio working, which I've described before, and the fonts looked funny, until I got my usual fonts transferred over and got their permissions set. And I had to get all the i686 packages I need for Second Life to work. But it's pretty much how I want it and working fine. No big complaints about F15 itself...the sound volume does seem louder and clearer though, compared to F14 which seemed a touch muted. No big deal.
