View Full Version : Requesting a working asound.state for SBLive!

I've just installed FC3 and as usual, my soundcard is horribly messed up - the sound is nowhere near the level I'm used to from Windows, nor the level I had earlier when using the emu10k1 drivers from Creative (from SourceForge). But I decided I'd try and make it work using alsa, which right now seems impossible. The millions og sliders in the mixer are giving me a headache, it seems every time I touch them they do something different. I have the Cambridge Soundworks speaker-set (I think that's the name - 4 small speakers and 1 subwoofer), and making sound come from the proper speakers is a nightmare. Frankly I'm quite disappointed that the alsa-drivers haven't improved one bit in this department the last few years, although I guess I have no right to complain seeing as I'm not contibuting anything myself (I would if I could though, that's for sure).
Sorry for the rantlike posting - onwards...
I've narrowed my choices down to two things; either I get rid of alsa and set my system up using the Creative emu10k1 driver, or I find an asound.state file which is already configured to give my card a reasonable sound output. Hence, this post. I've been searching the web and usenet trying to find a working file, but no dice. So I'm asking here - does anyone have a Soundblaster Live! soundboard that's performing nicely using alsa, and dont' mind sharing their asound.state file? If so, please be so kind as to post it here (you could email it to me, but I assume others may be having the same problem, so posting it here would make it easier for them).
Thanks in advance :)

I'd like it as well...my sound pretty much sucks at times heh too many "mixers" to configure that often lead to unpredictable results

Doesn't anyone have a soundblaster live! card configured and working nicely with alsa? Please?

Not sure if I'm using Alsa. I have the SB Live! card and have just installed FC3. The sound is fine, but when I use Gnome Volume Control I have LOTS of multiple controls for I don't know what (EMU10K1 PCM, etc). I just use the leftmost 'Master' and 'Bass' & 'Trebile'. Why so many? Am I using Alsa? I'll post my asound.state, but it's pretty big.

Bumping this, hoping for someone to help out this time.
I'm currently stuck in Windows due to crappy sound in Linux.

Yes, I have SB Live working, with only one problem. Every time I reboot, I need to "un-mute"
Master level with Gnome Sound Control. After that it works nicely. Yes, I am using alsa.
Every reboot makes it muted again, don't know why.

Do you have it working with decent sound? Cause that's always been the problem for me with SBLive and Alsa. I get sound, it's just not the level of "boost" I'm used to from Windows. It sounds pretty much like a cheap portable radio no matter what I do.

dont know if you still need it but It works for me perfectly
I also use the input for my tv tuner card
I also have the 4 + sub speaker setup - and the quality blows away the ac97 the via motherboard I have comes with
I wish I could remove mixers with a checklist like in other distros

Yes, I still need it, since thanks to ATI I haven't been able to boot into Linux in quite some time. But it's very good to have a sound config to try out when possible.
Thanks a lot :)

I don't think replacing your asound.state will help. If you make changes to it alsa will overwrite them with your current mixer settings. Asound.state is just a reference script alsa uses to initialize your mixer. What you may want to do is add an .asoundrc to your home directory. Be sure to include the '.' in front of the filename to make it 'hidden'. This script is where you can control most of the sound system functions by editing and adding to the contents. It is not automatically generated, you will have to add it to your /home directory. If you go to the alsa project website @ http://www.alsa-project.org you can find some scripts for .asoundrc. While you are there, you might want to download the latest alsa version (1.0.8) and install all the packages if you haven't done so already.

You can reload the settings from an existing asound.state file, which is why I was asking for someone's file who had their sound working properly. I don't remember how you do it off the top of my head, but it's been quite a few months since I posted the original post, and it's been a while since I booted Linux on my workstation, and my server doesn't have a soundcard ;)
And upgrading alsa isn't likely to do much good - this has been a problem ever since I first tried alsa, which is quite a few years ago, and I've tried several versions of it in between. It's funny how I'm the only person in the world with this problem though. Everything works fine in Windows, and it used to work fine with Creative's own kernel-driver, but with alsa, it just doesn't work. It never has, and chances are it never will. But we'll see when I get to try this state-file, I might get surprised.
