Is this release of FC3 a stable operating system or is it still within Development/testing.

I'm tempted to download and install it but I won't unless this can be confirmed.

deuch
8th November 2004, 10:07 AM
It's a stable version (release date is today 11/08).

For testing release, iso are placed generally in testing or development directory.

no problems :)

i couldn't be bothered to post dvd url :) dont have a dvd drive in my linux box :)

for others that server wont give you a directory listing - you can pretty much guess what the URL's will be ie if you want MD5SUM then append that instead of FC3-i386-disc1.iso :)

FC3 HASN"T been released yet - it will be in a few hours - this is just a headstart for people who want it - like i said in the original thread if people are worried this server is fake then download the ISO's and MD5SUM them against the official server (when its up)

cheers

Do you strongly recommend I download, install and FC3 rather than FC2 again?

Are there a lot of extra features? Is it worth the upgrade?

Now everyone is Downloading it via FTP and is not participating to the Community.

well i've installed FC3 but it isn't going as smoothly as i had hoped... somehow it won't accept my xorg.conf i used in FC2, now when i boot it just freezes at "Starting Redhat Network Support" (right after the HAL daemon is loaded), other than that i haven't come across any major issues (yet)

hope i can figure out how to fix this, cuz it's annoying the hell out of me ;)

Good news Mozilla users, your favorite browser is included on Fedora Core 3 but it is no longer the default. As you know, Firefox is. To choose Mozilla as default browser,

Applications -->Preferences-->More Preference--> Preferred Application
Tag Web browser and change your default browser for Mozilla.

You don't need to download the package. =)

Anybody elses torrent going slow? I'm only getting like 10kb... only gonna take like 5 days to finish :(

It takes a while for bt to get up to speed as you connect to people in the swarm. You usually sit there for a couple minutes doing nothing, then you get a few K/sec, then it starts climbing as your upload gets going. Note that limiting the upload usually limits the download as well. That's to encourage sharing. ;)

I'm currently doing ~110 KB/sec here. Note to people: Kb = kilo bits which is NOT the same as KB which is kilo bytes. :D

I highly recommend all taking a peek at Bill Nottingham's notes (http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2004-November/msg00002.html). A lot of stuff here for FC3 that will save you the trouble of asking later on.

sayeeth

The binary ISOs of course. On a sidenote, anyone knows how to upgrade to FC3 using yum?

ilja
8th November 2004, 08:19 PM
yum upgrade
but this is unstable.

bob
8th November 2004, 08:20 PM
Well, it was fun while it lasted. Installed FC3 on my backup machine and had it up and dual-booting (don't like the hidden menu though), until I set up my nvidia card. Did it from the instructions on Nvidia by leaving x and then running the 'sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run and then editing my xorg.conf to remove the 'dri' line and change 'nv' to nvidia. That went well with 'startx' and I could run Tuxracer, but only as root.

So, then I decided to reboot and my system is now hanging on 'Configuring kernel parameters'. So, looks like it's back to square one and another hour install.

sayeeth
8th November 2004, 08:22 PM
yum upgrade
but this is unstable.

Tried that, nothing happens. Do I need to change anything under yum.conf?

ilja
8th November 2004, 08:24 PM
I would use
apt-get dist-upgrade
this works for sure, but is also unstable.

Turnip

sayeeth

So you highly suggest I download the ISOs and upgrade from there?

ilja
8th November 2004, 08:29 PM
There were a lot of problems in FC1-->FC2. I would at least download the boot.iso and do a netinstall.
But there were also a lot of cases, where it went ok.
Are you a lucky person? :D

Narcisso
8th November 2004, 08:31 PM
Hello guys I"m only online for the next 2 hours....

OK major question......how do I upgrade to FC3 from FC2? I've got Grub as my boot loader with dual boot defaul bieng my Windows XP Pro SP1 machine (i've only got 1 HDD); My WiFi card isn't working in FC2 so online isn't an options (its gonna be Internet café for Torrents and burning CD's.

2nd question, is there native support in FC3 for Atheros based WiFi cards (such as DWL-G520 by Dlink)?

3rd question will FC3 allow me to plug in my Samsung Yepp Y-55i MP3 player/USB Key once its booted up to auto boot that drive??

Burning need to upgrade; as I'm fustrated with trying to load (or whatever its called) WiKi packages in FC2 for the DLink card - I installed as a Personal Desktop so installing the kernel source from the CD's isn't happening nor is it easy - its asking for way too many dependancy's and I have NO clue where to find them.

Any help will be much appreciated.

PS to all those die - hards in the community thanks for improving upon something great and willing to share it - even with nuubs and pundits like myself.....giving us an alternative to Windows; I'm in the weening stage.

oh yeah tomorrow I'll post an attachment Jpeg for a desktop pic, in rememberance for Christopher Reeves; I know its a while ago but I'm partial to Superman (created in Canada, and the first movie I've ever seen in the theatres)!

Cheers :D

sayeeth
8th November 2004, 08:33 PM
I don't know about being lucky, but when I did a fresh installation of FC2, everything worked perfectly. Though I won't bet on everything working smoothly when I upgrade to FC3 once the darn bittorrent completes. It's like taking forever. :(

So, looks like it's back to square one and another hour install.
disable rhgb during boot.

Nvidia and FC3 don't seem to get along, if you attempted a driver install and it hangs, use the rescue CD to boot to the console and edit your xorg.conf to the way it was. That will permit you to boot as normal and wait for nvidia to issue new drivers.

Bob - when you get this worked out please post some tips. This is something I will have to go through as I have an nVidia card.

Are you using the latest Nvidia drivers dated 5th November?

According to the nVidia linux forum the driver works with FC3. I didn't spend a lot of time searching, but it looks like there shouldn't be any problems.

My torrent was unacceptably slow (<20kB/s), even though I was uploading at 25kB/s - and not choking (my upload cap is ~45kB/s).

Switched to FTP, now downloading at 50kB/s... still slow, but at least it's consistant.

I used kget this moring to start a download, I go to work and when I get home it is not anywhere on my harddrive. I check the Kget log and it reports a successful download. So apparently I had the iso for it on my drive and then it was deleted somehow automatically. So a word to the wise, KGet is suspect. I don't have any timed processes to my knowledge that would eat it.

This really sucks, im dowloading from the duke torrent, no upload or dload cap, and im still getting <20 kB. At this rate, it will only take another 20 hours :( ...Dont get it, and this is after downloading for like 4-5 hours while i was at work (started dl at lunch)

Doesnt make sense, speed spikes then drops back down to like 15ish, spikes again to like 30 for a min, goes back down... Doesnt make any sense at all.

From the Fedora website:
---
Note: If you are using HTTP or FTP to download, some download clients cannot handle the DVD image because it is larger than 4 gigabytes. Please refer to the documentation of your download client for details.
----

Mozilla can't handle anything greater that 2GB. Try gFTP or BitTorrent.

The duke.edu torrent is slow, switch to the other torrent file that was in this thread - I was getting 80Kb/s from the duke torrent, I switched to the other one and now I'm getting 350Kb/s. I also tried FTP directly, but get dropped halfway through. Bittorrent is the way to go, but for some reason there's a problem with the duke torrent file.

:( I have downloaded this twice today. Once via FTP and once via the duke torrent and both times my MD5SUM results are similar to this:

$ md5sum --status --check FC3-i386-disc3.iso
md5sum: FC3-i386-disc3.iso: no properly formatted MD5 checksum lines found

Any suggestions? I am not looking forward to another download...

I tried about ten ftp sites and couldn't do any better than about 45Kb/s - but I tried this site from Ireland and got a full 195Kb/s - stable for iso's 1,2 & 3

If I just used
md5sum FC3-i386-disc1.iso
then it shows the right checksum, but if to use
md5sum --status --check FC3-i386-disc1.iso
or
md5sum --check FC3-i386-disc1.iso
then some errors happen.

What's wrong?

88.7% - 45 minutes to go :) only took 10h or so to get it all done it looks like :) granting I can keep this download rate.

Anyone tried the Upgrade FC2 -> FC3 with any sucess or would you guys suggest installing FC3 fresh vs. the upgrade?

I am gonna download it tomorrow and make fresh install ;)
Could someone tell me the safest way to make fresh install of FC3.
I have got dual boot with WinXP on 120 GB SATA HDD.
Is it sufficient to allow Anaconda installer format all Linux partitions and reinstall grub?

Ah so now I've installed, we come to the questions of the extra repositories (Livna and Fedora.us), MP3 support, a nice RPM of the nVidia driver, and other stuff that FC2 had. But so far so good, it's running pretty nicely so far.

Regards,

Neil. :)

Without those options those keys are correct for me. I guess that those errors doesn't matter, because checksums are correct.

I am going to burn cds now...

I have just verified that without the options my checksums are correct as well. I have already created the CDs and I will continue to load them on my "test" system first before I attempt to update my primary machine.

Good luck!

To use the --check option you have to specify the MD5SUM file, not the ISO.

Everything is working just fine now on FC3 after a Fresh Installation. Had to reconfigure my wireless usb adapter but that was a breeze. FC3 sure is fast and smooth! I'm begining to like it already. Next time I'm going to backup my data and do a fresh install. :p

Thank you! Another example that shows how patient one should be and read the man page. I am sorry, it would have been there, I am sure.

OK, but I am a happy Fedora Core 3 user now :p

Sorry for the ignorance, but are the SRPMs the source code for the FC3 iso's?

The GPL-Licence forces everyone to publish his sources. Because RPMs are only binaries, RedHat publishes also SRPMs with sources.

I just upgraded from FC2 and Preferred Application is missing from the menu.

Could someone please tell me the command I can type to run it (assuming it's still there)?
