View Full Version : Has anyone successfully installed Nvidia Drivers in 15?

I downloaded and installed Fedora 15 on a spare HD to see what it looked like. I love the initial look of Gnome 3, although the menu was a little sparse. I couldn't really see the full effect of it without the Nivida drivers, and not matter what I tried, they would not install. I disabled SE Linux, and tried Leigh's way, then Easylife. Has anyone done this yet? By the way, good job, Fedora Team. Gnome 3 is going to be great!

Hi leigh,
I have tried akmod with each new kernel since F15 alpha and for some reason it always fails. I'm running right know the latest kernel 2.6.38.2-9 in my 64 bit box. I tried akmod 270.30-1 from rpmfusion with all dependencies installed, but something fails during the boot process. Let me know if there is something else I can try. My card is a gforce 7300 and no update to noveau nor mesa seems to fix the issue.

Hi Jason, yes, I have done that dozens of times and prefer using kmod instead of akmod. But since there is no kmod available yet for the current F15 kernel I have no option but the akmod way. I'm frankly baffled because it always worked with either kmod or akmod with this same card since at least F13. Also, either way blacklists noveau without manually editing of grub.conf. I'm suspecting this particular nvidia gforce 7300 is somehow exotic. I might even consider replacing it. :(

So, I guess my best option would be to uninstall akmod-nvidia and wait for either a kmod for my current kernel or a noveau update. :(

I uninstalled nvidia and went back to basic video, even with recent updates to mesa drivers. I tried glxinfo and got the attached input, which is too long to display. I'm contemplating the unpleasant option of turning off indefinitely this machine and survive with my Thinkpad T60, until this mystery is finally (and hopefully) solved.

So far everything I do ends in failure. My motherboard is a
ASRock 880GM-LE Socket AM3 2xDDR3 with Nvida on-board video, and to install Fedora 15 and enjoy the effects and eye candy of Gnome 3 I really need those video drivers. I am seriously thinking of looking for another disto with Gnome 3 and Nivida drivers in the package. Please, someone help with this? I have installed Fedora 25 Gnome 11 times now, trying to get those drivers installed.

Yea, I also tried the "yum -y install kmod-nvidia" command, but instead got akmod drivers, which would not load the module upon boot. It's fully that other Linux Distros have Nvidia drivers out of the box, how do they do that?

Yeah, I also tried the "yum -y install kmod-nvidia" command, but instead got akmod drivers, which would not load the module upon boot. It's funny that other Linux Distros have Nvidia drivers out of the box, how do they do that? I simply love Fedora, been using it since FC6. In the old days it was easy to install these drivers, a few simple commands and you are done. Now it's seems to be so complicated even a pro cannot do it. I don't just have a Nvidia PCI card anymore, I have an Nvidia chipset. So drivers are a must. Will the released version be easy to install the drivers on, or will it be even more of a nightmare?

Finally, can't remember just excatly how, but it had a lot to do with Leigh's instructions, I got the drivers installed. the command Leigh gave produced Nvidia for the video driver. Called up Nividia settings, it told me the driver is not yet installed. OK, so rebooted, and could not get past "starting display." Failed again.

No, it didn't work. Oddly, as I understood kmod-nvidia is supposed to make sure the correct nvidia module is installed, while akmod brings the components (not the pre-built module as in kmod) to build the module and install while booting. This kmod, however and as others have stated already, brings with it the akmod party, which I kind of understand since there is no pre-built module yet for kernel 2.6.38.2-9. Sadly, it doesn't work for me. :C

After installing kmod-nvidia (which in fact led to akmod-nvidia) GDM dindn't manage to start. Blacklisting nouveau didn't help me, I had to create a new initramfs.img with dracut. I wonder why this is no longer part of the Howto/nVidia (http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia) at rpmfusion.org, as that is where i found the solution in times of Fedora 12.
I just booted into runlevel 3 to circumvent the GDM hangup and logged in as root:
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

Define frozen gnome shell. What are you expecting to see and what do you see?
What I expect is a fully functional gnome-shell, as in my 32 bit Lenovo Thinkpad T60. What I get is a gnome-shell in which everything is frozen, except for the mouse pointer (no clicks). You can see, for example, startup programs like gkrellm with frozen statistics and the splash screen of exaile music player staying forever. Sometimes you even get sound from exaile, without any kind of control. Mouse moves freely bot no action can be executed. Is like a general freeze less than a second after login. You can logout with the keyboard using alt-ctrl-backspace and even kill X with alt-ctrl-F2. In other words, the rest of the system works but the shell itself. You can see the shell in all its glory and full 1600x1400 resolution but do nothing else but to either force a logout or kill X with keyboard commands.

For this newcomer to Fedora, would you please give me your step by step on doing this?
I have tried all the different methods I could find online but I can never get past a post screen that just hangs after a command
I then have to remove x11.conf just to get back to a normal log in...

How are you installing?
I installed from the RC1 DVD (with basic video).
Once I was operational and had a work network connection I:
1. ran yum update
2. browsed to http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration
3. installed the repos for rawhide from the above link (both free and nonfree)
4. edited the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and added rdblacklist=nouveau to the kernel line (though I have since been told this step is not required and I have removed it with the same results.
5. ran yum install kmod-nvidia
6. rebooted
7. it worked for me.
This is a rather high levelo step by step, but if you need more or get stuck in a specific place let me know.

You may be onto something here... You can run the nvidia-xconfig and it will create an xorg.conf
Take a look at that one and compare it to the one in your wifes machine.. Perhaps it has something to do with the Devicex number being wrong.. It is a stretch, but it could be something
If you create the xorg.conf and cannot boot, you will need to boot 3 option and go in and rename xorg.conf in /etc/X11

I have gotten a little bit further on my other machine...
I installed the kmod method and as it loaded and configured nVidia in the setup, it tried to write something to the grub.cfg
I dual boot Ubuntu and am using grub2 from there (until I get all of Fedora 15 correct on everything)
So it failed in writing what was needed to be written to grub.cfg
I need to know what that was so I can add it from the Ubuntu grub2 and boot...
Or
If someone can tell me how to effectively stop nouveau
What is happening now is that it stops with the following message...

NVRM: This can occur when a driver such as rivafb, nvidiafb or

I have given up. After some 5 hours of installing again and again, and running commands again again, and trying every method there is....time to cut losses and give up. I just do not understand why Fedora makes it so hard to install these drivers. I used to run PC Linux. Installs the drives by default. Now as I understand it, PC Linux is an offshoot to Mandriva, and Mandriva is an offshoot to Fedora. So I guess if you copy RPMs from the Fedora database and make your own Linux OS, it's ok to use the Nvidia drivers by default, but not with Fedora. That about right? Get your act together, Fedora, and make this easy for us. I repair and upgrade computers in a rather large shop. People always are asking me about Linux, as I run it on my own machines. How can I tell anyone to try Fedora, when it is a nightmare to install the graphics drivers?

I went through a similar bizarre situation as well.
I have identical machines and on one, I finally was able to get nVidia drivers going
On the second, I reinstalled Fedora to start all over because I was stuck either in NV or Vesa mode and nothing else.. Even though everything showed as being installed correctly...
On the reinstall, Nouveau looked so good and right, I have just left it on and will leave it until it fails.. Then I will try the nVidia route again
I am also responsible for several business sites that are looking at open source, I left Ubuntu and Canonical because of the erratic changes to the desktop and I am looking at Fedora as the replacement. I agree with you, this should not be this difficult... Even if it means to drop to tty and install the drivers from nVidia, I can live with that, but from what I gather that is even more troublesome than what you and I have encountered.

Yeah, I used the default driver when I had a G-Force PCI card, but now I have onboard Nvidia chipset. When I use the default driver, the screen flashes so that you cannot do anything with it. I'm back to PCL, at lease the Nvidia driver ship with it, and no hassle.

If you are referring to the usual update process via yum, the answer is no. I went directly to the link provided and clicked on the desired link (in my case, the 64 bit version), once downloaded and answered yes to the install inquiry, then yum takes charge of the installation. This is an experimental or testing kernel, but apart from a couple of freezes while using the shell in a intensive manner I have found no further issues so far.

This is an experimental or testing kernel, but apart from a couple of freezes while using the shell in a intensive manner I have found no further issues so far.
I did try this method and updated everything (grub) but was surprised that the akmod process I was expecting did not happen...
As a matter of fact, the only thing yum did install was kernel-2.6.38.3-15.rc1.fc15.x86_64 and nothing more.. I was expecting all the dependencies to install as well...
Still a learning curve for me, so not an issue

That's correct, no nvidia fix, just a kernel fix with no dependencies attached. I checked the log for this particular kernel and noticed a bunch of changes regarding the interplay between the new kernel and the nouveau driver. So, it appeared the problem was not with the drivers (nouevau, kmod-nvidia) but with the kernel itself.

There is a (seemingly) sure-fire fix: The '.run' method, i.e. the NVIDIA binary driver.
The rpmfusion drivers just do not work for my desktop (with a nvidia 9800GT) and laptop (nvidia 330M GT). I followed all the advice and married up the exact same driver and kernel that worked for others in this forum .... but not for me.
See: NVIDIA driver in Fedora 13 and 12 INSTALLATION using the run method

It worked perfectly for F15 beta for both my computers. I used the latest driver from the nvidia website: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-270.41.06.run
I made one modification to step 13: I shortened the first ModulePath line. The original article quoted:
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia”
However, after I installed the nvidia driver, I found out that the /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia directory did not exist. This might be something that’s changed in the 11 months since the article was updated.
The author reckoned that all you need to do is repeat step 12 (run the script) each time the kernel gets updated. That's not too much work really ....
