In many refferals to Gnome there is the item:
System -> Preferences -> Main Menu
That seems to be missing from my installation of F14...
How do i turn it on or restore it?

(i want to add a specific app, jConsole, to "Known Applications")

I don't think I can help you directly, but I just wanted to say that I use F13 and this is present in this distro. I have never used F14, though.

I guess you mean a menu editor?
# yum install alacarte

Yes! That works through to installing jConsole.

And it installed the item "main Menu". Perhaps i have a stripped version (eg i do not have a magnifier...) Is there a general path towards extendng the system?

Use the software management tools (http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/14/html/Software_Management_Guide/index.html) to install the packages and package groups you need.
