Can someone tell me how to get rid of the empty spot in the Systray in KDE?
Its only fills up as a key when you run a app with root privs.

Ah, that's where the 'root' icon will appear when you log into the terminal as 'su'. Fooled me for a couple of days too!

Misread, I see that you already know what it's for. So, why do you want to eliminate it?

The only way I can see to do it is to right-click on an empty area and 'remove-applet-system tray' which will eliminate all indicators, not just the blank one.

I want to remove since its a waste of needed space.. I use the system tray heavily and dont need a empty spot to be there only to be filled very rarely by a set of keys... Gnome hanldes this the proper way and just slides the any other that are there over and then shows it. And surely i dont want to remove the entire system tray
I dont even need the stupid key to be shown..this isnt windowsXP

have you tried simply moving all the icons to the right?
my right side icons reposition themselves when things are added or removed, like gaim or keys.

I have the same problem not only with the authentication indicator (the key ring) but also with some other gnome applications like the Red Hat network systray icon.
I could'nt solve the problem, but I found this simple way to hide these undesired icons: right-click the systray handle, than choose "configure systray", than in the window that pops up drag all the icons you would like to hide from left to right.

I'd actually like to have that "feature", however, I have never seen it in my KDE panel. How do I get this to happen. See below for a screenshot of my tray the way it gas always appeared. I've never been able to see a "key" when root is logged into anything.
