View Full Version : Icons and Wallpaper missing after update?

Hi there, I think this is a common problem but after updating most of the system icons and the background has disappeared after updating Fedora 15 Alpha. One of the possible solutions was to downgrade to an eailer version of gsettings-desktop-schemas. Does anyone know which version exactly and steps on how to actually downgrade? Since I've never had to do it before.

Thanks!

either use "yum downgrade gsettings-desktop-schemas" or download the version you need as rpm package from here (http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=10754)and then install it. Version 2.91.91-2.fc15 works.

Ah that's done the trick. Thanks!

When your background disapeard, what did you see in it's place?

ojdon

It was just a solid black colour in it's place instead of the default blue wallpaper.

I'm wondering where that black was coming from, if it is a file or not, ie, how to change the official one. Changing keys in Gconf-editor doesn't do it.

I believe you need to set the background in dconf-editor now. I saw in one of the updates
that the schema key for setting the background is being changed.. probably yet another case
of not all packages being updated to reflect changes elsewhere.

Once I downgraded gsettings-desktop-schemas it was just a matter of going back to the control centre in order to choose which background I wanted. :)

That did it. thank you! That control centre is so out of the way that I never thought of it, just right click and curse.

Just to warn you in advance: Now not only gsettings-desktop-schemas but also gnome-desktop3 leads to missing wallpapers and icons after update!

These updates shouldn't be applied at the moment:

Most of them have broken dependencies. So you won't be able to update at all. And some of them are causing trouble like described in this thread.

maybe it works if you update both gsettings-desktop-schemas and gnome-desktop3?

I had this problem with missing wallpaper and backround today, but after updating gsettings-desktop-schemas (version 2.91.92-1.fc15) and reboot I have background and icons again :)

And now icons and wallpapers seem to work fine. Only thing is, when I want to change my wallpaper in control-center, I'm instantly thrown out of my gnome-session and have to log in again via gdm. BUT the wallpaper has changed after that!

//Edit: Now it seems like every other login my wallpaper is changed to a black background. Then I have to change my wallpaper via the control-center which again leads to the above behaviour: Gnome throws me out of my session and I have to login again via gdm...

as described in this bug report...

... solution/workaround seems to be:
# ln -s /usr/share/gnome-background-properties /usr/local/share/gnome-background-properties

Ran the updates this morning. Tried via yum but that failed so used update manager (in yum tried the advice at the end but it didn't work for me - it noted the liberoffice, poppler, etc. problems).

After the updates it had me log out and then back in - once in the background was black. Decided to log out a second time via the drop down window under the users name - it froze everything but mouse movement - knowing of no other way rebooted via the soft boot button on the computer.

Rebooted fine except again black wallpaper.

Firefox on opening google never completed the load, although seemed to work ok. Pulled up system monitor and noted it would cycle, for 1/2 second or so on 91 receiving and 119 sending, then a 1/2 second on 0 receiving, 0 sending, then back to the 91, 119, and so on without end.

Just to provide counterpoint, I haven't run into any of these issues with my F15 install.
I updated it early evening yesterday with a couple extra bits from koji. Maybe there is
a disconnect with a needed package not getting pushed into the mirrors in time? They
haven't been great about coordinating their package builds which has caused such
high levels of instability this go-round.

@vallimar: Is you updates-testing-repository activated? libreoffice-deps in updates-testing are broken. That's the least you should run into when updating ..

Thank you for the link to bugzilla tuxor.

After my last post I went in and just started trying programs, be it games, gimp, whatever. In doing so I used gnome-dictionary, looked up a word - it worked fine, so I closed it. This ended up producing a bug report. I followed the steps to report the bug and the last window said the following ;

Empty login or password
Please check /etc/abrt/plugins/Bugzilla.conf

Not sure if it sent or not, but seems like maybe I need some sort of account or something - please advize as to what I need to do.
(I went and set up a bugzilla account - do I actualy need to enter the login and password, unencrypted, into the Bugzilla.conf file??)

With respect to the screen turning black, I am wondering if it may be related to the drop down window under the users name, as opposed to being simply a wallpaper problem. I had it going just fine until I tried to log out using that drop-down menu.

You usually don't have to fill in the Bugzilla.conf. Username and Password are safed in the gnome-keyring. Of course, filling in the Bugzilla.conf will suffice. But usually you are asked for your username and password by abrt...

Ahhh ..... was confused on setting up the account ....... the account "name" being ones e-mail address - got it straight, thanks.

When the system misbehaves, are there log files I can look into that might help me understand better the problem - or better, where exactly do I look?

tuxor

usually you find good log-info in $HOME/.xsession-errors and in /var/log/messages .... There are also other log files to look at, but I'm not quite familiar with that ;-)

l@vallimar: Is you updates-testing-repository activated? libreoffice-deps in updates-testing are broken. That's the least you should run into when updating ..

Certainly do. I don't use open/libreoffice though so wasn't affected. Only problem
I had was with mysql, they didn't have all the dependencies recompiled for the soname
bump yet so I skipped those. I also watch koji and install selected bits directly from there.
Sometimes to my regret.. like when I took the last grub build and could no longer boot.
Ouch.. but I'm used to fixing those things so not a huge deal for me.
