Hi all!

There is a new version of Gnome Shell available in rawhide which I would like to try out. However, it pulls in much of Gnome 3 and a very recent version of xulrunner+Firefox.

What is state of these libraries in rawhide? Completely broken or pseudo-stable enough for usage if one can put up with occasional crashes?

if you're asking if you should install this on top of f14, no, by all accounts, no. it'll break stuff badly.

if you're asking if you run a complete current rawhide, do things more or less work, the answer is yes, with a few quibbles. I'm running it now, including Shell. it works.

your best way is to Create a another Partition 10Gigs and install F15 ( RawHide ) on that, that way you'll have the stable Release aswell as Rawhide to boot into

@AdamW & @detox:

So it seems Rawhide is in a fairly ok shape this early on in the release cycle. Yeah, I look at having a separate partition for F15 and determined whether the I should use the same /home and user account among them (which would be easier if Linux had a more straightforward way of bundling .configs into profiles). Thanks for your feedback.

i would use a New Fresh /home , dont share.. its like installing Firefox3 and then installing Firefox4. you should never share profiles.

yeah, I wouldn't share a /home between GNOME 2 and GNOME 3. No specific data, but I'm fairly sure it could get odd. The problems usually come when you use data from the *later* desktop on the *earlier* one; the developers will usually make sure your config from the older software will migrate properly to the newer, but they won't make sure you can use the newer config data with the older release.

For me right now F15 is at decent Alpha quality. There's buglets around the place, but I can run the major stuff and do my work. Firefox crashes every time you download a file (so use wget), Evo had some text rendering issues which seem to have gone away now, gnome-terminal crashes mysteriously after half an hour of any session and Terminal leaks memory like crazy so I'm using lxterminal instead...that kinda thing.

It's a gnome related issue or it's a F15 / Kernel issue? I'm downloading rawhide right now :). Do i need a 3D acclerated Card to run Gnome 3 / Shell ?

Yes for which question? I had three question in a row :p

AdamW

well, there's different issues. I don't know exactly what you're asking is a GNOME or f15/kernel (what?) issue. Yes, you do need a card with 3D support.

hellnest

Well it's confirmed and breaking my system... @)@ the x server try to load a module which is not supported by my card. Not 3D ready only 2D acceleration. Well i guess i must put my hope down to run rawhide / F15 in future :)

I've just downloaded the Fedora Nightly Compose. How would I enable Gnome 3 on it?

Thanks

hellnest

I Guess it's enabled by default. Or maybe you must invoke the command from command shell

AdamW
9th December 2010, 09:34 PM
yeah, it should be enabled by default, but if not, try installing desktop-effects (if it's not there already) and select GNOME Shell from that.

if you need or want the opensource 3D drivers just login to terminal an do a

yum list mesa* and choose to install the Experimental driver

---------- Post added at 08:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:52 AM ----------

then you can launch the Gnome-shell from Desktop-effects

I just ran it and it is installed. I just went selected 'gnome 3' from the desktop-effects window.

Thanks detox for the additional info. :)

I took a screenshot of it. Can anyone tell me if this (http://ubuntuone.com/p/SwK/) or this (http://ubuntuone.com/p/SwJ/) is the most current and up to date Gnome 3? I've seen other versions that look a more advanced.

Also, I just tried installing rawhide twice and it will not let me log in. But what did I expect? :p

tox

this one is the current one at the moment http://ubuntuone.com/p/SwJ/ .. i would think Fedora gets the current one whenever there is a release. the guy that looks after the Gnome-shell in Fedora's name is " owen taylor " a redhat guy looks after all of that. if you have seen different, show us that pic

what your probably seeing is. white Box's which make Gnome-shel;l look more advanced, but its the same, , if you Minimize Firefox an Hover your mouse pointer on the side of the screen an thing will pop out, and you'll see a + and a - sign there. by pressing the + you'll get more workspaces ( box's ) appear . , thats the same as you will probably see over on the Ubuntu forum. in there Gnome-shell thread.

AdamW

yes, that is the latest gnome-shell. if you mean by 'more advanced' something like this:

http://www.happyassassin.net/extras/old_shell.png

that's an older version of the Shell. Remember, this is GNOME, things get less advanced as they get newer. ;)

Before the latest xulrunner updates - everything was fine with Gnome-Shell on my laptop (ATI, Open Source Driver) - after the updates, the shell will not load anymore. Waiting for 2.91.4!

have you tried yum --downgrade gnome-shell 2.91.3-2 i think its that command.. . if not do a yum help but i get a rather same problem, i think it was ever since GTK3 got a ABI update G-S-2.91.3 will not load, it needs 2.91.4

if your Desperate and wanna install 2.91.4 download it from the gnome ftp site and compile it. http://mail.gnome.org/archives/ftp-release-list/2010-December/msg00105.html

Thank you for your post, but everything was fine with the Shell 2.91.3 before i've updated xulrunner. Anyway, today the Shell 2.91.3 is loading after the latest gjs update!? Sometimes mutter and the shell is crashing, when I'm trying to use epiphany, firefox or midori.. with chromium all is running fine. I think it's a continueing xulrunner prob.

have you ran or tried to run Epiphany or firefox in terminal by doing a su and seeing what the output is of the problem.

have you tried installing a Nightly tarball of Minefield/firefox beta9 and trying that?

just another idea, what you could do is install Opera11 .. i cant see why Opera wouldnt load

Hi detox. My problems with the Shell and the mutter crashes are solved. The solution - a simple reboot :)

Midori is working fine. Firefox and Epiphany not.. but that's OT.

is it possible to get the favourites be visible at all times and not just in the overview?

rantadi

No that's not possible at the current state. (the ubuntu-unity-shell have these ability through a compiz-plugin)

Maybe in the near future, there will be a mutter-plugin for that, but i'll prefer a dock, like docky or awn.

That dropdown not opening in Midori looks like disabled Javascript.
