Does anyone know if a "nvidia nv17 geforce4 mx 440" graphics card has 3D capability's? And if it does, does anyone know what driver I would need to install to get 3D effects working?

The latest driver from nVidias web site is 96.43.19. From the description on the web site, it seems as if these cards provide 3D support.

I haven't used either of them, but I see that that particular version of the 96xx nvidia driver has appeared, pre-compiled, in the rpmfusion repositories recently as has the 173xx.
Probably an easier route to take than compiling your own.

I have a GeForce 4 MX420/NV17S card using the mesa-dri-drivers-experimental in an old
H-P desktop that has an Intel P3, 550 MHz with 784MB RAM. My experience with it is the
graphics card is a very poor performer in the 3D department. I believe the graphics memory
is only 64MB.
I do have a GF6200 256MB DDR card that works well in the same computer though with the
mesa driver experimental enabled and resonable 3d effects. I normally don't enable compiz on
the old H-P or on my P4 3GHz box with a GF9500GT w/512MB DDR unless to see how well
the open source driver is working. :)

EDIT: I may try that old card in a newer box with a P4 1.6GHz chip and see how it acts and will
report back with findings.

for the GF4 and older ( i have a gforce2 mx 400) the VERY VERY last driver for it that works with the 1.8 xorg is
96.43.19
the 4 cards are hitting there End of life
time to buy a new computer and replace the 8 to 10 year old box.
you might need to use the nvidia.run if fedora dose not have the old legacy 96XX kmod
as to the "l to get 3D effects working" YOU WILL need to make and BY HAND configure the xorg.conf
the settings ARE on the compiz-fusion web site
and in the nvidia documentation on the nvidia web site in the README

PS.
on a old computer i would give up on using fedora on it
I have an old box with a gf 2 and run CentOS fine on it .
and the driver dose support the 1.6 xorg in Cent
