My desktop hardware:

AMD 3ghz 64bit dual core CPU
2GB DDR2 RAM
ASRock k10n78m pro MB
Nvidia Geforce 8200 chipset
500gb 7200rpm SATA HDD

X.org crashes, frequent instant logouts

I frequently get logged out of my KDE session, usually after starting or interacting with an application. I haven't been able to trace the application thats causing this. I have switched from nouveau to Nvidia drivers and back, and from Kwin to compiz. I disabled and re-enabled selinux. None of these attempts stopped the crashing/logout behaviour.

I tried using gdb to debug KDE from startkde, but failed. I also tried running startkde from a terminal, but when the crash occurs after starting this way there is no way to return to the terminal, or do anything except a acpi poweroff (despite the fact that magic keys are enabled).

Any ideas?

Sam.

Same here, using Gnome ATM as it was beginning to get annoying!

Yes. I have the same motherboard as you do, and I had the same problems. Installing the Nvidia drivers would stop the flashing on the screen, but would mes up the installation. I tried several other distros that come with the Nvida drivers, and had other problems. I finally got out my old Nvidia G-Force FX 5500 PCI card that I bought from Walmart a few years ago. Plugged that in, installed Fedora 14 with the default Nouveau video driver, and everything works fine now. Of course I do not have desktop effects, Compiz is not even installed. But, my install is stable and video is clean and responsive.

These things would most likely go away if Nvidia would release good drivers and Fedora could include them in the installation.
